Use notebook hard drive in desktop?

I was thinking of building a new desktop, but I already have a notebook hard drive, could that work in it or should I get a "big" sized one? Also I have XP preloaded in my notebook, so can I use that for the new desktop or do I buy it again? Should I keep XP regardless, or get Windows 7? How would Windows 7 benefit the new comp?

It would work and the connectors should be the same to connect to the hard drive.

But you should buy a mounting bracket to hold it securely inside the desktop. Because the laptop hard drive is a lot smaller it will not mount inside a normal desktop without an additional bracket.

Also, laptop hard drives are generally slower than their larger desktop cousins. So that might be a consideration if you are building a performance desktop.

Windows xp will probably fall over when it is shown dramatically different hardware. You will probably have to re-install it.

If you have a computer that meets the recommended requirements for Windows 7 and you can afford it, then upgrade to Windows 7 definitely.
