Why do some people not like Arabians?

Would like to know what you think the pros and cons are regarding Arabian horses.

A lot of people don't like them because they tend to be a little on the hot side and not inclined to stand still. Also, they are very intelligent, so the person attempting to train them needs to be as or more intelligent as they are (and a lot of "trainers" are not - - oops here come the scary td's). Also, they do not submit to abusive training methods.

I like them but the conformation of the typical Arabian is not suited to what I prefer to do with them (jumping). But do like them a lot, and really enjoy training them. People are entitled to their own opinions and dislikes and likes.

All the Arabians I've met have been extremely highly strung and nervous, and one was very very bitey! I don't personally like the look, not a fan of their extreme concave face really. And did you know those who do the high-end halter showing of Arabians actually get surgery done on their horses to make their necks look even more slender around the head? Eww and pointless!

My lasting memory of an Arabian is of a friends one, I was on her Welsh mare who didn't care about anything, was a sweetheart, her Arabian was the opposite, we were on a grass verge, a tanker truck was going by, my horse didn't care, the Arabian was terrified, quivering all over, feet splayed out ready to leap 10ft in the air and RUN. I also fondly remember that Arabian's "gift" at showjumping, by showjumping I mean stopping and then crashing THROUGH the fence rather than going over it.

It's all down to personal taste really. I'd rather have a chunkier solid native breed, like a Welsh Section D, than an Arabian!

Everyone I have every met that didn't like Arabs were not educated. Arabs can be anywhere from 13.3 to 16 hands, which is the same range as the quarterhorse for height. I've heard "oh they are all hot blooded" even though they were sitting on another breed that is also considered hot blooded (that would be most horses that aren't warmbloods or drafts), again this is because those discriminating are not educated. Unless they have had bad breeding (some people breed sire to it's own filly) they are a smart breed which gets them into trouble. They are the oldest pure breed to date and prior to the US breeding them badly they were breed to never have any issues. Back in their desert days of old the mares would sleep in the tents with their masters, so were breed also to be gentle and people loving.

Of course no breed should be thought ill of, only the individual horse, they all smell like horses.

Not all Arabians are hot heads. My friend has a really calm Arabian, well almost the calmest horse I've ever seen. As you probably know, not all horses in a breed are hot/ or calm, it depends on the horse, but generally most arabians are hot headed.

Arabians are beautiful horses, and have amazing endurance and agility, but they just aren't cut out for most major disciplines. They're small and light, and are great for low-level showing (there are a lot of Arabs in 4-H) or breed showing, but they aren't as talented at things like jumping or western games as a Thoroughbred or a Quarter Horse might be.

Arabs can also be really hot and flighty. Not all of them are, but I've encountered a lot of excitable Arabs, and many are not suitable for beginners or young riders. (Don't get me wrong, I see a lot of bomb-proof Arabs used for beginner lessons, but I've also seen plenty of crazy ones...)

I rode a slightly green Arabian mare for a few months, and she was hard to handle, though it was fun. A horse like this makes a timid rider really nervous. I personally like most Arabs, but I can definitely see the reasons why many don't like them.

Arabians are different in the fact that they will do anything for you, if they feel like they are your partner, try to show an arab who's boss and he will hate you. Arabs don't get along with those 'know it all' horse people, they don't like being treated like a slave. My arab doesn't like strong personlities, or forceful people, he would buck or do everything he could to them off his back, but little kids he absolutely adores, and will be very gentle, and slow with a small kid on him back. My arab is very strong willed, the first time I tried to load him in a trailer, I pulled and shooved him, and baited him to 45, then finally I gave up exhausted I dropped the rope and sat on the ground. He gave me this look, and just walked into the trailer on his own. Just didn't want to be forced.

They can be great horses, but they only get along well with people who treat them as partners, vrs slaves.

Im not a huge fan of arabians.

It just depends on the horse i guess.

there was this one horse at my barn, that had the most awful confirmation. its face looks like a moose, and it just had bad confo.

But my sister owned a grey arab mare for a couple years, and she was just so beautiful. and well behaved.

I usually like the looks of well bred arabians, they look very fine, but if its some backyard breeder or just not a good quality horse, I dont like them.

Also, I like warmbloods and Draft horses instead. I like big boned tough horses, arabians are just too dainty for me.

although, they are perfect for endurance!

I never liked them due to their size - that and their fragility, the arabians I grew up with always seemed to be predispositioned to getting injured, and needed eight rugs to get through our Norwegian winters.

My reason for not liking arabians is that it's the stereotypical girls' dream horse - "ohmygodIwantanaraaaabian" is all they know about horses, and it's driven me crazy ever since I was little. Sure, they're pretty, but they're a little TOO pretty for my taste, with the whole deal about the concave noses and all... They've got a whole lot of versatility, speed and endurance, but considering the price and size, I'd rather have a Standardbred =)

I love Arabians! My Shagya-arabian is the sweetest boy! He always enjoys being around me! Wouldn't trade him for any other horse even though he is naughty some times.

I have worked around lots of arabs. Have seen some though thanks to bad breeding and training that I wouldn't take even if you gave them to me.

I think people like a breed that best suits their discipline. Western sports like QH, paints. Jumpers like tbs and warmbloods, Endurance like arabs, don't see many other breeds crossing the finish line at the Tevis Cup!
