my 6 month old puppy died! Plz Help!?

The other night, the temperature was 30 degrees. I put my 6 month old pit bull/mastiff outside on my porch to do his "duty". His water bowl and food was outside too. When I went outside to let him in, and hour later, I found him lying on the pavement, eyes wide open, stomach bloated and barely breathing. More like taking one breath every 10 seconds. I tried to revive him, but he was pretty much lifeless. I noticed his water was gone, but his food was untouched. Can someone please tell me what might've happened? I'm thinking he drank his water so fast that he froze to death. Please keep in mind that he had a good coat of hair on him, and a thick blanket by the door. Also, I tried calling the vet, but in this small town, it was closed.

Update:

***HE WAS NOT AN INDOOR DOG! I KEPT HIM INDOORS LATELY DUE TO THE COLD WEATHER! HE WAS WELL FED! I ASKED FOR HELPFUL ADVICE, NOT INSULTS! IF YOU'D READ IT THOROUGHLLY, IT STATES I LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN, THE VET WAS CLOSED. NO EMERGENCY ALTERNATIVE! THANX

Update 2:

**to SHELTER PUPPIES RULE***...

I certainly do still have my mini pins :) :)

they're spayed and neutered. As for my recent puppy, I found him abandoned 2 months ago..maybe something was already wrong with him that I didn't notice

I don't feel as sorry for the pup as I do for you.

I'm very sorry to be reading that.

I don't think you could have predicted that.

Who worries about hypothermia in a dog?

I've done the exact thing hundreds of times with pups and never lost one to the cold.

It could be some other physiological reason but since his belly was bloated and the water was gone

    it's possible that you're right.

He was on the pavement with a full belly of water he most likely felt a chill and laid out to warm up but the ground pulled even more heat away instead.

A good lesson for all of us.

So sorry that this happened to you.

Read up on hypothermia in dogs to see if you can find any other similarities.

I agree that if you want a definitive answer to what happened, you will need to get a necropsy done on ur pup. If he was gasping for air to me I would assume that he had choked on something. If he'd been inside and his water was outside, he probably would have drank the water first then look off to potty. He may have found something and choked.

30 degrees is cold, but I think it would take more than just cold weather to kill a dog that fast. Considering you had a blanket for him and I know my dogs will throw a fit when they want in. You probably would have found paw marks and the such on the door or heard him if you were home... He would have stayed as close to the warm as he could, like the blanket or the door.

Im sorry to hear about ur pup.

Why did you not contact an Emergency Vet in the case your local Vet was closed? This dog should NOT have been left outside, unattended or in the least check up on for an entire hour in this weather. Why would you have his food and water outside if he is an indoor dog? Sounds like he was destined to be an outdoor dog in a climate that is impossible for him to survive outdoors 24/7. Just because he had a blanket to lay on doesn't mean it kept him warm, since his sides and back and face were open to the elements. Drinking his water to fast would not make him freeze to death, that is an absurd suggestion. My guess is this dog simply froze to death througnegligencece of ownership.

I don't think it was the water, if the water wasn't frozen, I've had to break ice in my dogs water bowl so my dogs could drink.

There has to be something physical wrong with him or else I would think that there is fowl play, someone giving the dog something.

I would see if a vet could find out why.

I own a male pit/ bull mastiff. And he has short hair just like a pit bull. 30 is too cold for a dog like that. Mines an adult but given the wind chill factor it can make it much colder. I don't think he could last an hour in that temperature outside either.

I promise that when you get the results of the necropsy you will have your answer.

Anything else would just be a guess, and with losing such a young dog I know how important it is for you to have an answer.

The necropsy results will also bring you peace of mind knowing that it was nothing you could have prevented.

Only a necropsy can tell you the cause of death, not a bunch of strangers on YA's. Why didn't you call your vet? If they were closed, their phone recording, or answering service, would have had emergency vet info.

thats so sad..he could have possibly choked on the water is he drank it too fast but i dont really know if thats possible...ur hypothesis is good to.. do they do puppy exams like they do on ppl?? if they do then ur best choice is to have a vet do a exam on his body is you really want to know what happened...again im very sorry for your loss. i know how hard it is to lose a pet that you love dearly

    did he have his shots

was he being care for by a vet

maybe he was sick and the weather was to much for him

lets see it's 30 degrees and i put you outside for an hour, but you have a warm coat in my locked car. you should be ok, right.

  • well since you left a 6 month old PUPPY outside unsupervised, nothing but a necropsy can tell you with certainty.

Ah I see 3 yrs ago you were back yard breeding. what happened to her, died in labor?
