Just bought a used car, have the pink slip but no registration. Will this be a problem?

Pink slip signed by the owner.

The car's tags are expired (February 2010).

Don't have the car's registration.

Will this be a problem when transferring ownership?

Update:

Car's from before 1975, so need for smog check.

I live in California.

no the owner kept the registration because on the back when you sell a car you take the registration and fill it out with all the buyers information, and mail it to the dmv. What happens when you go in, the dmv register the car in your name, and gives you a temporary registration to prove you now own the car. You will need proof of insurance, and may need a smog certificate depending on what state you live in. So register and enjoy your new to you new car!!
