Would it be tacky to ask for money as a Christmas present?

My fiance and I are surviving on benefits at the moment due to both losing our jobs during the duration of my pregnancy. I am 36 weeks pregnant and due to give birth just before Christmas. Family have offered to buy us Christmas presents but we know we'll end up with things we don't want/can't use. Is it tacky to ask for money as a Christmas present or give them our electric and gas card to add money to so we don't have to worry so much about bills over that period?

It's perfectly sensible. We actually always ask for gift vouchers so that we can buy something that we really want.

Not tacky in the least: it's eminently practical and sensible. An explanation regarding why you're asking for the cash rather than other gifts would be recommended...but anyone who gets their underwear in a twist over it needs to grow up and admit today's economy has screwed a LOT of us.

Ask your family about giving your giftcards for gas/places your frequent/visa cards that can be used same as cash for bills. It might be a bit rude to give them your cards to top up, but explain the situation and you'll probably find them more than willing to help out.

It may be more difficult with outside family, but if you just ask for visa cards and the like people should understand.

Best of luck, and I hope your year gets better!

I don't feel that given your situation it would not be wrong to when asked to ask for gift cards to grocery stores, gas stations or pharmacies. But only to family and close friends. Just ask in a sincere way and be sure and send them a thank you. Best wishes and congratulations on the new baby !

I think it is tacky to ask for money unless you are asked what you would like. Gift vouchers would be a better way of asking maybe for somewhere like asda where you can get food nappies etc.

Money would be kinda tacky. Maybe you should ask for gift cards to grocery stores or something like that...?

Usually I would say YES VERY TACKY but in your situation it is more important to think of your baby and swallow all pride. You need to relax and you don't need any extra stress at all. If your family has a clue at all you shouldn't even need to tell them you need money. They should know, however diapers are expensive so if they give you anything to care for the baby be grateful and best wishes to you all.

Explain that you don't want them to waste money on gifts ,but if they could see their way to putting money on your gas and electic cards you would really apprciate it.

  • No, its perfectly alright. Ask for money, or gift cards for a useful shop.

Asking for money or gift vouchers would be the right thing. Merry Xmas.
