Senior Citizens: What do you think of these old advertisements? Any memories of any of them?

From 1898 through to 1910 HEROIN was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children.

Hi Gerry, interesting Q yet again.

One or two of those were before my time but I do remember the Pears soap ad especially when it started the competition for Miss Pear's and the prize was her photo on the cover of the bar.

Ha what about the one of the child holding the 'safety razor', wouldn't health and safety have a field day with that one.

Very interesting. A lot of doctors were hooked on heroin around that time. Love these old ads. Very interesting site yet again. Well done!

If I remember correctly, heroin was first produced by a pharmaceutical company in Germany. At the time it was indeed thought to be non-addictive.

Mind you, Bayer make some very good products to fight cockroaches and other invasive pests and you don't see cockroaches on the streets trying to buy their next shot.

Any memories of them, how old do you think we are.

I must say they are very good, I like the one for the prophylactics, she is dead dodgy, seams on the front of her stockings?

And the exhaust cleaner, now there is one for how to top yourself without trying.

Oh the Heroin one of course was upmarket Opium, you know the stuff Mothers sent their sons a pennyworth of, when they were in the trenches.

I remember a few of these ads. I think Coca Cola originally had cocaine in it. Aunt Jemima ads were blatantly racial, but no one seemed to realize it at the time. The cigarette ads were thought to be glamorous. A lot of teenagers smoked back then and nobody thought much about it. I wonder what people in the future will think of our ads of today.

The last ad hit very close to home.(Literally) I live two blocks north of the mansion where Coca Cola was formulated.

The gun ad was funny in a tragic sense.

My mother told me that during the 1920's-30's in the states, her aunt used to smoke small cigarettes called,"asthma relievers." They were actually legal marijuana for asthma.

wonder back in the day how many " moral "straight citizens were actually drug addicts.

My sister told me they used to drink coke-a cola and take asprin to get high.
