Gay marriage opponents--about these "civil partnerships" y'all keep talking about...?
Would you favor making them in every way legally equivalent to marriages, including custody/visitation rights, pensions, adoption, taxes, probate, insurance, and so on, just with a different name?
Proponents--if ALL legal benefits/responsibilities of traditional marriages were included in these partnerships, would you be satisfied?
After the papers are signed you may of course describe your relationship however you wish, so how important is the name of the document?
@magick--should single persons be allowed to adopt?

I agree, so lets take the term marriage out of the civil law, make all "marriages" domestic partnerships, and leave "marriage" in the churches where it belongs. Domestic Partnerships between consenting adults of any sexual orientation can have all the legal status of what was formally called marriage.

I would favor that...the problem is, the federal government won't recognize them, so they can't be totally equal. It's a state's decision and they should have the same rights on the state level.
However, if the government dropped marriage as a legal term and all legal couples were considered civil unions, the Fed's wouldn't be differentiating and should then recognize all couples.

A marriage certificate is just a piece of paper.
Even if Civil Union, or Common Law is written in big letters and both parties sign the thing, it's just a piece of paper.
Why the hell do some people feel their relationship is more valid or has more importance than any one else's?
If your spouse is going to cheat, that piece of paper isn't going to keep them from doing it.

I think the government should ONLY recognize civil partnerships.... leave "marriage" to the churches

No. Homosexuality is a perverted lifestyle choice & should not be recognized morally by marriage or legally by civil unions.
