Is it politically correct to say "Retard" in the US?
I notice that a lot of Americans on TV programs and the like use "mentally retarded" still, when speaking about people with mental disabilities or mental handicaps. In Canada, where I live, this is completely taboo and considered horribly rude. Is it not considered as such in America?
Please, only mature and knowledgeable responses.

There are 2 meanings to "Retarded" in the US...
1. Mentally Retarded as in someone that has some form of cognitive disability, now not politically correct and changed to "People with Cognitive Disability".
2. "Retard" as in someone that DOESN'T have a form of cognitive disability but ACTS like they do out of intellectual laziness or willful ignorance.
The US has devolved in to an Orwellian sh*t-hole of Political Correctness and you NEVER know what will be seen as "Politically Incorrect" no matter what it is you are saying...
When I say "OMFG... What a retard!" I don't mean "I am making fun of a person with legitimate mental problems because I have low self esteem and wasn't raised to know that making fun of the disabled is bad."
When I say "OMFG... What a retard!" I mean "WOW... That person has no cognitive disabilities yet is so willfully ignorant that they are pathetic."
I never mean it as an insult to people with disabilities. I'm physically disabled and have experienced discrimination because of it and I would NEVER make fun of someone for their disability.
People that are completely "Average" yet through their own intellectual laziness or brain washing are another matter entirely...
There is a MASSIVE difference between "People with legitimate disabilities" and people that are just mother fu*king stupid.
People that are willfully ignorant and want to stay stupid because ignorance is bliss are retards and SHOULD be made fun of.
This is a question I posted a few hours ago:
✖ How do “Ghost Hunter” shows get “Strange” things on EVERY camera/recorder BUT the one sent by Sci-Fi Channel?
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgY0A...
I’m watching “Fact or Faked” on Sci-Fi because the Asian chick is REALLY hot and it is funny watching these retards run around doing all sorts of really stupid “Recreations” that make no sense.
I said "Retard" because there people ARE retards... As in people that SHOULD be acting smarter but choose not to.

EVERYONE needs to get off their high horses and grow some skin. It isn't up to the whole world to cater to what YOU feel is offensive, it is up to YOU to act like an adult and grow a thicker skin.
"Sensitivity Training"?
We need DE SENSITIVITY TRAINING so you can learn to cope with reality and the fact that no, it isn't MY problem that you are such a winey little overly sensitive b*tch.
("You" meaning an open letter to all humans on earth.)

Yes, mentally retarded is used. Doctors even use it (not in the offensive way). It is used to describe mentally ill, mentally disabled, and mentally handicapped people, but now, it has become a pop culture thing that some people use in place of the word stupid or dumb. If you call someone who isn't mentally disabled retarded, some people take offense of it, but the person who said it was generally calling the person dumb.

I don't think that this is a PC statement. Look at how many find it incorrect. Moreover, I believe in this statement. In proper context it simple says that if you harbor or support people who have, or are planning to do us harm, then you are as guilty as they are. I don't think you understand your position very well. I am very much against a majority of what is PC. Most of which is BS, in an attempt to change the mind of people. You've heard "illegal immigration," versus "undocumented workers" ? One is more accurate than the other. One is PC while the other is not. Do you know the difference? And which group do you think prefers which?

Mental retardation is an actual term used in the medical field. But it is a certain condition. As is autisim and the likes. Retard tends to be used as a blanket slur. The pc phrase would be handicapped, mentaly handicaped.

No. It is in fact VERY offensive to call a mentally handicapped person a "Retard". If you were to say "Mentally Retarded" it is correct, but still taken offensively, as it is slightly cruel and can be used as slang for and idiot or stupid.

yes, it's correct when speaking about someone who has a mental disability. however, using it to describe a person with no disability IS politically incorrect even though many people in america do.

Mentally retarted is an offensive term here in America. The proper wording is 'mentally disabled'.

Probably depends on context. If you are referring to an automobile, retarding the spark is an acceptable way of using the word. If it is used perjoratively with reference to a person or class of people, it likely is illadvised. I know lots of people that I would catagorize this way, but not in a public way. Probably depends on your love/distain ratio.
