Has a Republican EVER balanced any budget?

Dwight Eisenhower was last Republican President to preside over a balanced budget. He had a balanced budget in 1956 and 1957. Since then, there have been two presidents to preside over balanced budgets, LBJ in 1969 and Clinton in 1998 through 2001. During the last 40 years there have been five budget surpluses, all five were under Democratic Presidents: 1969, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001

Eisenhower was a Roosevelt friend and almost went Democrat. He was a great leader who respected and was respected by both parties.

Republicans don't like balanced budgets. They prefer debt, so that there's less money to spend for what they consider socialized programs like public education, medical, job training and the like.

Praising LBJ, wonderful. Praise the guy who cranked up the war in Viet Nam. Praise the guy who used the SSN trust fund to disguise his and the Democratic Congress's profligate spending habits.

    Yeah, that's praiseworthy.

And Newt Gingrich was responsible for the budget balancing act in the 90s. Clinton's plan was to offload the big cuts until 2002, which would have been the year the budget actually balanced. Gingrich fought back, got Clinton to compromise on the budget cuts, and got it balanced 4 years before the proposal from Clinton.

You are wrong. President Nixon had a balanced budget. I can't remember the year but I was in my 20s when he balanced the budget. It was a big deal back in the day. He would have been a good president except for Watergate.

Yes, during the clinton administration. The Republican congress took care of that as they are supposed too.

A republican congress and democratic president did in recent history, yes. But they had the benefit of a supply side boom driven by healthcare innovation and technology stocks.

Funny thing about those "surpluses" in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001..

Federal debt increased during each and every one of those years. Oops.. maybe you should actually think for yourself instead of just mindlessly repeating the lies you've been told.

Oh no. They are now saying that it's wasn't the presidents fault, it was Congress'.

So that makes me wonder why they still blame FDR for SS and LBJ for Medicare and Medicaid?

    Congress did it.

Why do we blame presidents for fiscal things at all?

    Source(s): LOL - I told you.
