Ever get comments on your 'lean' dog?

OMG- if one more person tells me my dog is too skinny, i'll blow! He's just right- vet checked, fed high quality food, and not obese like 90% of the labs you see out there.

Anyone else keep their dogs in a healthy, working condition and have people add their ignorant $.02?

Update:

Launi- Those pics are wonderful! That looks like a lotoffun, beautiful dog, too.

More Bored Collie: Cute beagle! Beagles rival labs in obesity too I think- I've seen WAY too many of both. I've seen pics of your border in previous posts, too- def. trim and healthy!

Ava- What a pretty girl! She looks good to me!

Update 2:

Unpredictable: Sasha's beautiful! Love that pretty coat, and certainly looks the right size to me,esp. for a growing pup.

Oh gawd I get it ALL THE TIME

In a community of apparently obese beagles, mine is automatically pegged as "starved to death" or a JRT mix.

My beagle (and even that is a bit chunky for him):

What beagles should NOT look like:

Oh...and my Border Collie is apparently "Way too skinny for an Aussie"

Which makes sense....because he's a Border Collie, not an Australian Shepherd :-/

Your Lab looks great to me. I think obesity is just becoming more accepted among humans and animals alike - which is wrong

  • Oh gosh all the time; I even get it from my fiancee!

Most dogs nowadays are either overweight or obese. It's such a problem that many people think that's what a dog ought to look like! They are literally killing them with kindness.

I'm sorry but I'll take my dogs' body condition over the "norm" any day. Far less health problems down the track.

There's an obese Dalmatian on my street and I have to say, she's one ugly dog. I much prefer my lean, "skinny" Dals.

Yes! I get the comment "That is the thinnest German shepherd I've ever seen" more often than I can count. She eats 4 cups of food a day. Her appetite is more an normal & she eats plenty for her size.

I bring up not wanting to have too much weight on a young dog that is still growing & developing as it can add stress on joints... they look at me like I have 6 heads.

    This is Ava.

She is a healthy, active dog.

A fit dog has a tucked up stomach and when looked at from above, should have a dip in at his waist between rib cage and hips. Two of my five Chihuahuas look like a sausage when viewed from above. But one is a 5 month old puppy and the other is an 11 years old and spent her first 8 years scrawny from bearing 2 litters of pups a year at the puppy mill.

  • I often open carry which is legal in my state. My dogs are pretty big and don't make friends easily...so no I rarely get anyone's $0.02...

My mother on the otherhand would moan and grown about how thin my dogs were. As a 20 year breeder of Rottweilers I think she was simply trying to convey the body type of a Rottie on my GSDs...yeah...LIFE doesn't work that way mom! Your dogs have a 50 gallon barrel for ribs!

Um. That's about the condition my Lab is in. Pretty dead on I'd say.

You know, I went to a dog party not too long ago and someone was telling me my dog was too skinny. I look at his dogs and they were terribly obese. I literally stared at him going "uhhhhhhhhhhh."

    ooooooook.

    lol

Ugh. I don't have a picture that shows his fully body on me at the moment. Just close up face shots. Black labs are hard to photograph.

My lady has gotten nutrition poisoning as quickly as, whether that's complicated to tell precisely what that's from extraordinarily if the canine in question likes to play exterior and chase animals. i think of, in case you're advantageous that's the bone that have been given your canine ill, then it became into in basic terms that one bone wearing Salmonella. whether, your canine would are turning out to be Salmonella from something: yet another canine, eating or fiddling with a lifeless animal in the backyard (poultry, squirrel...) or maybe eating some flowers in the backyard. Salmonella would be everywhere. A uncooked weight loss plan is often extra healthy for any animal, alongside with human beings. I actual have heard however that smaller breed canines each and every so often would be unable to abdomen an all uncooked weight loss plan, so a factor-uncooked area-dry kibble (without corn and made out of real meat) is best for them. in case you feed a uncooked weight loss plan, don't worry on the topic of the beef/bones going undesirable, canines can eat what we would call spoiled meat. additionally they'll probably 'conceal' their bones and dig them up later. My canine, because of fact she would not dig holes, will conceal her bones in her blanket or mattress. the sole element I worry approximately is that if the bone became into dry packaged, like those on the cabinets at a puppy shop, and that i consistently examine to work out if the oils/fat on it are turning out to be rancid. if so, I throw it away and get a sparkling one for her. i'm advantageous, in the journey that your canine continues to be eating and you're giving her each and all of the prescribed meds, she would be high-quality. yet consistently take her to the Vet if she gets ill/vomits distinctive circumstances.

  • It's so funny you asked this now! Just last Saturday, I took Sasha to her first Search and Rescue training, and the trainer made a HUGE deal out of the fact that Sasha has a waist! She acted as if my dog would keel over any moment. After she learned I fed a prey model raw diet, she made an even bigger deal about her needing supplements and veggies LMAO! She went on to say I should run blood work on her and get her checked over. She then took me over to feel her chunky, overweight Belgian Tervuren, as an example of a "healthy" dog. She was EXTREMELY rude in that she couldn't keep her misguided thoughts to herself.

    Yup. All the time.

Particularly the working dog (German Shepherd) who has a "doggy sixpack".

I think your dog looks great.

I do believe that most people are simply used to seeing overweight dogs and have no idea what a good dog looks like. I much prefer lean to even slightly overweight.

Your dog looks just fine to this Lab owner. My Lab is about the same size and maybe a little heavier, but he is not a working dog.
