Does it matter if Christians know anything about their religion?
Like how the Bible was formed, or how their denomination was born?
Is the only thing that matters what you've been taught and what you believe?

Christians need to know about their religion so that they will know what to believe and what not to believe. The bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin, but it also teaches oppression of women and condones slavery.

It depend on the person you are.
If you are to put your faith in something you know little about than you have a faith based off of what you were told and what others want you to believe.
If you are and individualist and think for yourself you will want to learn about the faith you've chosen to accept.
Are you a Christian because you were told to be a Christian, or are you because you want to be a Christian?
My advice is that you should believe what you want to believe in, not just because that's what others want you to believe in. Ask yourself difficult questions of whether or not you actually believe in the bible or if you just want to believe in the bible. Is there a God? Does it matter if there's a God?
There's thousands of religions confident that there's is correct, some predate Christianity. How can you be so sure that your God is the right one? Why are you so sure?

Whether a questione typed into the internet comes up under "You're stupid for having religious faith", or "Myth and Folk-lore", or "Christianity", or "Personal Beliefs"? None of this, nor the things I have listed matter to me, nor any other man of woman of the Christian faith and beliefs.
Almost everything in Christianity (or the other two Abrahamic Religions) is tied to something else throughout history. The fact that the largest religious wars are fought between three religions, all tied to Abraham... who is REALLY the right sect of religion? The fact that the Bible was canonized by Constantine, a life-long pagan, turned Christian on his deathbed; the fact that Constantine only added books to the New Testament which showed the Son of God, AS a God (read the Gnostic Gospels to view ALL of the Testimonies of Jesus); the fact that the books of the Bible were translated by scholars in the Library of Alexandria whom, at the time, had no knowledge of "Old Hebrew" to the Hebrew spoken during their era... were there mistakes in translation? The fact that oldest version of the Old Testament is the Codex Sinaiticus, dating from the 3rd or 4th century A.D. and nothing else older is known to exist? The basis of archeology digs turning up not even a fire pit in marked locations from the Bible in todays known landmarks? The fact that the New Testament was not completed until nearly 300 years after the Crucifixion of our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ leaves ample room for a 300 year old game of "operator", with details lost or embellished? The fact that [nearly] all of the Bibles before King James's reign were ordered destroyed to make way for his "new and improved" translation (which he added and omitted certain sections to fit his liking and attract more pagans to the Christian Religion) is the most common Bible read today; the most common translated Bible (The New International Version) is derived from the Old English version of King James? How about the numerous Bible contradictions? How about historical inaccuracies that do not link or even add up to sections of the Bible?
We believe in God not just because of our upbringing; on the contrary, some of us have found God on our own. We believe because we must; because we believe there is more to life than just living and dying... Because of Faith, we are able to push ourselves to be a better person. We believe; we KNOW that God is real. Through the day-to-day miracles of our lives. Something as simple as becoming a parent should be more than able to quell your curiosity of the authenticity of Christianity; or God... Have you ever had a child? When you hold your child for the very first time, how can you not believe that God is there? He is Omnipotent in all his wonderful glory... somewhere, somehow He exists...
I hope this answers your question; whether you believe or not.
Signed,
A humble man.

It matters intensely. I was raised attending Christian schools, where we studied not only Christian history, but the beliefs of other religions and denominations (presented in a serious and factual manner). Our teachers had no intention of turning under-educated people out of the school; part of being an educated person is to study different viewpoints and practices. Also, I have engaged in a great deal of private examination of religion on my own. No religion, organization or nation will benefit from ignorance. I strongly support interfaith education, as well as learning the history of one's own religious beliefs or philosophical stance.

I think they are responsible according to intellectual ability and opportunity to learn. However, all that matters is coming to know the Word of God.
I've learned quite a bit about the "religion" and history, but some knowledge can be detrimental to faith. I think it is better not to know in that circumstance.
Basically, if the knowledge edifies, it is good to share.

I'm presently reading and studying an enormous textbook on the history and teachings of the Catholic Church... I guess you could call that knowing a little about my faith.

Well, we, as Christians, should be aware that many of our Christian traditions and some of our beliefs have been hijacked from Paganism. Many turn a blind eye to that, for whatever reason.

If they are not familiar with history, they become sitting ducks for an atheist's version of "history". The latter, of course, never having read a single book on the history of Christianity.

You should learn about all the other religions too.
