How many atheists are really atheist?

I ask this question because of all the "atheists" I've met about 99% of them turn out to be really agnostics who just believe that the possibility of there being no God is higher than the possibility of there being a higher power.

Update:

Geezah there are 3 basic forms of agnosticism. Agnostic theists, agnostics, and agnostic atheism so I think this is a good question.

    About 99%?

Wow you must keep very accurate statistics of your social encounters.

In my opinion the vast majority of atheists are just that. A-theist.

Even those who proclaim agnosticism are often just plagued with the guilt and fear which was programmed into their minds as children by whichever cult leader they happened to follow at the time. You will find that those people who "convert" to atheism often feel strangely guilty for their conversion, whereas those who never have the abuse of indoctrination forced upon them are happy in their atheism.

Oh boy. You need to understand what these terms actually mean.

Agnostics believe there is no way to truly know either way, but may be theist or atheist, generally depending on their guesses at the probability of each case.

An atheist does not believe in god. But they can also be agnostic, as the two are independent of each other.

The people you speak of are actually atheists, they just arent strong atheists.

    Edit:

If you are familiar with the terms and their definitions, how could you possibly think that those people are not atheists.

Clearly, you either dont know the real definitions, or you are arbitrarily making new definitions that make no sense.

And of course, there are agnostic theists, and agnostic atheists but there is no such thing as just "agnostics". You are either a theist, or not.

In other words, you don't really know what the terms "atheist" and "agnostic" actually mean.

Contrary to popular misconception, the terms are not mutually exclusive. Atheism is absence of a belief in deity ("a" + "theism" = "without" "belief in deity). If you believe in a deity, then you're theistic. Otherwise, you're an atheist, period.

Agnosticism is the assertive belief that the nature and existence of deity is ultimately unknown and unknowable. That's how TH Huxley defined it when it coined the term in the 19th century. It's not a position between atheism and theism; it deals with knowledge rather than belief.

Well if you understand, then your question makes even less sense. What do you mean by being "really atheist"? Sounds like a classic case of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. You seem to be dishonestly redefining "atheism" to exclude agnostic atheists.

LOL If agnostic atheism is one of the valid forms of agnosticism by your own admission, then it follows that agnosticism and atheism are not mutually exclusive. In other words if you had a set of all atheists and another set of all agnostics, there would be an intersection of those two sets which includes all agnostic atheists.

Your question just doesn't make any logical sense. All atheists are atheists by definition. Duh

An agnostic atheist is still an atheist. Atheism means you don't believe in any god, not that you think you can prove it or something else weird.

The key difference between atheism and agnosticism is assumption. Of course, no one can prove or disprove god/s exist, so atheists assume (based on lack of evidence) that god/s don't exist. Agnostics on the other hand find it to be plausible, but not practical (based on lack of evidence) that god/s exist and are therefore an unknown and will remain an unknown

You are talking to an atheist now I find the idea of any form of supernatural being to be utterly ridiculous. Religion is based on the idea that this utterly ridiculous idea actually cares whether you play with your willy. My advice, get an education

why do atheists suddenly have to worry about fitting some mold? This is irrelevant.

Im not atheist but I like what they stand for a lot more than what religious people do,
