Plumbing Question: Slip joint without washer?
I just had a massive leak under my kitchen sink out of nowhere, called my landlord and reported it and turned off the water to the sink. Upon further inspection, I noticed that a slip joint connected to the garbage disposal had fallen off. When I looked at the slip joint, there is a nut at the top of the pipe, but no tapered washer like you would normally see. Is this normal? I would think it a bit odd, but I'm not a plumber by any means, so I wanted a second opinion.

There is a relatively new product on the market which has a thin black "o-ring", instead of a nylon washer. However, while it looks a lot like the traditional style, the nut does not come off.
It sounds like the last person to "repair" your drain didn't have a washer and left it without one. In some positions in the drain line this can work until the drain backs up.
Anyway, your only responsibility is to inform the landlord that the drain is broken and needs repair. If you want to tell them what you found, feel free, but it's not required.
Good Luck
