Building Contractor Nightmare! Contractor installed wrong colored siding & won't fix it.?

The contractor ordered supplies to build our garage after a fire. Once the building was almost done, we noticed that the windows and doors were bright white and the siding was an off white. Our house is very white and the color match is terrible. Our new garage looks dirty in comparison to our house. Does the contractor have responsibility to fix this? Are there any specific laws to support a homeowner against shoddy contractor work?

Update:

The contractor is licensed

Update 2:

I have paid the contractor half, he has now had a lawyer send me a letter requesting the rest, plus extra money that he lost because I have refused to allow him to repair my house!

It's all about the paperwork! Read through your contract scope. Determine if a specific color is mentioned in any paperwork you've signed. If there is a color listed, and you signed (even if it's not the color you wanted) you're stuck with it. Lets hope you have something that says, "match existing, or match house color". If there is no mention of a color, and you did not approve a sample, you have some ground to stand on. Do your homework, make sure the product you agreed upon comes in the color you want before talking with the contractor.

I can only speak from experience. As a licensed contractor I do everything I can to ensure my Owners are happy. Which sometimes includes eating the cost of the siding. I am MUCH MORE apt to work with an owner to get them exactly what they want (even if it's not what I expected to do, and costs me money) if they are professional and courteous. Bear in mind, no contractor messes a job up on purpose. We are just like everyone else, and mistakes are made.

If you get no relief, contact your local Contractor's Licensing Board for advice.

I'm actually quite surprised that no one asked if you had already paid this contractor in full. If not, I certainly would withhold the balance of the money until the problem is fixed. That's about the only real leverage that you have, other than a specific mention in the contract about matching colors to home, etc. It's something most good contractors would do instinctively, but I supposed some don't. They assume that you, as the customer, will take what they give and be happy about it.

And as the other answers have mentioned, you can file a complaint against the company with the local Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, State Contractor Licensing Board, and whatever else controlling boards there are, plus a lawsuit in the local court house.

A licensed contractor would be insured and wouldn't have a problem fixing this mess. If he is a licensed contractor and he won't fix it you can report him to your state and make a complaint against his license. If he isn't a licensed contractor, you are pretty much on your own. Call an attorney, file a lawsuit. All the laws in place that protect home owners from shoddy contractor work only prevail over licensed contractors. For your sake always hire a licensed professional.
