My muffler fell off...then the exhaust pipe fell off too! Can this be toxic to my passengers or myself?

I have a 1992 Nissan Maxima which is old and rusted. A few months ago the muffler fell off. about a month ago, the exhaust pipe fell off. I have not looked under the car to see where exactly it broke off from, but I know it's gone (my brother in-law ripped it off when he saw it dragging on the ground). I would really like to know if this is dangerous for me to be driving around with it in this condition. It's very loud, but that doesn't bother me. When I am not moving (ie. at a red light or warming my car up on a cold winters day), I can smell the exhaust. Can I be slowly poisoning myself?

Thank you so much for serious responses

If the exhaust pipe does not extend to the rear of the vehicle, exhaust fumes can be pulled into the cabin. This is not healthy for you or your passengers. You should get it repaired ASAP

There would be a higher potential if you sat in one place with the windows down and the engine idling, that exhaust could collect closer to the windows of the car and come into the passenger compartment. It could be even worse with the ventilation drawing in air though the heater to make you warm and comfy and sleepy and never wake up from CO poisoning. Just get a new muffler and tailpipe put on at a muffler shop. The time you spent here on the computer could be better spent getting the job estimate.

it could be if it is cold outside and you have your windows rolled up the fumes can leak inside the car filling it up with carbon monoxide and it could kill you or make you sleepy feeling and you could wreck or wreck into someone else and not only put you in danger but everyone around you in many states like California's you can have your car towed away because your polluting the air and for loud noise.its a cheap fix someone just needs to weld it back on 25-45$ at any muffler or auto shop

The loudness will bother the police and you will likely be towed & impounded for over $500, plus repairs.

You'r knowingly endangering your passengers lives. If that doesnt bother you either, consider the legal consequences.

Check that your oil filter, oil drain plug and other things havent also fallen off.

  • the toxicity depends on where the pipe ends now and how much will reach the cab of the car. since you have stated that you have lost the cat, you need to have it fixed so that you are still emission compliant and safe.

YES it can cause the exhaust gases to come inside the vehicle when driving. Get it repaired.

Good luck and God bless you.

It will only sound different, louder, since all the pollutants are dealt with in the catalytic converters.
