The Emperor was led to believe that he had a great outfit on. But the tricksters were playing on the Emperor's pride - that's what this story is about. The Emperor did not want to appear stupid as he could not see the outfit and didn't want to say anything.
Hope that helps!

Read the story! The tailors only SAID they'd made him some new clothes out of a very very special cloth. The vain emperor wanted new clothes made out of something very special, that no one else would have, and hardly liked to admit that he couldn't see them when the tailors said only intelligent and worthy people could see them. So the emperor "put them on" rather than seem stupid and went out naked. Everyone else also wanted to be thought worthy and not stupid, so they all "admired" the clothes. But they all looked rather stupid when a child pointed out that he had, in fact, nothing on.

Because he had to be convinced that he was indeed clothed rather than naked so it's hard to carry out the deception without continually referring to the nonexistent clothes.

Because he believed he had fantastic clothing and so he took to wearing imaginary clothes in substitute for real clothes.

It was to show his stupidity
he believed he had "new clothes" but really he was wearing nothing.
the title of the story is somewhat sarcastic.
nevertheless, one of my fave childhood stories!!
