Why do people of strong religious beliefs tend to be extremely intolerant?
If they are so secure in their beliefs wouldn't it make sense that they would just leave everyone alone and be happy? How come they feel the need to push their beliefs on everyone in the name of their favorite deity?
Non-believers apply as well. For (insert favorite deity)'s sake why can't people just leave others alone? To broaden the question, why are people intolerent at all?
ZomB_Hunter, as much as I disagree, I would love to have a philosophical discussion with you :D

If the religion is the only true religion on earth (and which religion doesn't teach that?), then it makes perfect sense that members of the religion should look down on all the "misguided" people out there.

Many do push and that's unfortunate, but there are many that just desire to share. In order for them to receive, in many cases someone shared with them. True everybody don't want to hear any type of religion told to them and I gather from your question, you are one. If I assume wrongly, please accept my apology. Giving the message of hope by telling others is the means by which believers were instructed and that's what they are doing. Following instructions. I would imagine that if you had something you believed to be good news you wouldn't just keep it to yourself. I would think that you have a friend or somebody you would want to share that news with. The only difference is that the message of hope is offered up for everybody and there are those who wish they can tell everybody, so that this grand opportunity doesn't miss anyone. Many are going to refuse, of course, but many are not and its all because someone was willing to talk and endure the rejection that will come.

I have only one wish in this world: that everyone have the choice to believe in what I think to be the truth. They may choose whatever they want, but I will not stop until they fully comprehend the choice that is being made. Then we may go about our separate ways. It is unfortunate that even suggesting only one truth exists is "intolerance." Oddly, why is there so much intolerance of bigotry in the world? It's not a logically universal concept, tolerance.

Umm, are you forgetting the non-beliefs as well, i do not support any public displays of religions but the atheism bus campaign was pushing it. Same with the Christian billboards going up around my country :/

Most religions' values tend to be based on the period and culture that produced the religion, and that frequently refers to harsh, ancient tribes from tough neighbourhoods.
Hence harsh and ancient tribal values are perpetuated by a proportion of modern religious folk.
So, how do you think you should beat your slaves?

maximum atheists are actually not illiberal in any respect. in spite of the undeniable fact that, lots of those in this website are maximum suitable here to bash the non secular. in addition, maximum non secular persons are sort and tolerant, yet maximum human beings of those in this website are maximum suitable here to proselytize and condemn nonbelievers to Hell. it relatively is common to locate examples of idiots who hate you right here, even though you have self belief (or do not). Please do not take human beings from the information superhighway as an occasion of their opposite numbers interior the actual international. the information superhighway is a haven for the illiberal human beings of the international who intend to make their prejudices difficulty-loose. Pay them no concepts.

Christians try to spread the "good news" through love because they are concerned ....you cannot call that being "extremely intolerant"

ask penn jillette. Christians "push their beliefs on you" because of the love they have for you. its because they believe that they have a concern and want you to have a saving knowledge of God.
