Haven't we already solved our environment/energy crisis?

There's been a lot of talk about peak oil, global warming, sustainability, etc. A lot of issues surround the one big issue of running out of oil, coal and other fossil fuels.

Haven't we already solved this problem?

It's called NUCLEAR POWER.

It produces massive amounts of energy from splitting small, microscopic particles. It's relatively cheap to produce compared to other renewable sources. It will soon be cheaper than coal and oil as their production slows.

Breeder reactors can produce more fuel at will. The amount of waste produced is TINY compared to the damage to the environment by fossil fuels.

Question is...

Why are we so slow on this??

Update:

Peter Schiff....

I understand what you're saying about the free market. In fact, I'm in favor of using nuclear power for energy... but I do NOT like the fact that it receives gov subsidies. One day though, the price of oil and coal will start to skyrocket (as their production slows), and nuclear will eventually be the more profitable option. The oil will not last forever. It can't. It's a finite resource. The question is will it run out in 30 years... or 3,000. No one can seem to agree on that. But...

My whole point is that if the free market is allowed to work, nuclear will be our saving grace someday. Wind, solar, all that other stuff won't cut it.

Petroleum is in a tremendous amount of our products. Oil isn't just an energy source but a key ingredient in many of our products & plastics. Truth be known, petro runs our industry and going nuclear won't solve the problem. In terms of oil being scarce, that is a point that's been debated by specialists for decades. I'm not sure I'm believing we're going to run out any time too soon but the fact remains, economy runs on petro, which makes it more valuable than gold. That's why we're in the Middle East.

I don't know. France currently gets roughly 70% of its energy (can't remember the exact percentage) from nuclear power. And as much as I hate to give them credit, they've got it right.

Three Mile Island and Chernobyl made living near a reactor unattractive.

How about the free market? We have plenty of oil left.

Because environmentalists don't want us to have clean energy; they want to send us back to the bronze age.
