What is feminine about long hair?
Why is short hair thought of as masculine? Many societies have associated these hair approximations with gender, but why short=male, and long=female?
Persian men can have long hair; Western African women can have short hair; Native American men can have long hair; European men used to wear powdered wigs...
But why do we associate longer hair as more feminine?

Let me break it down for you:
1) A very feminine person tends to not do harsh physical things like play baseball, football, mountain climb, boxing, etc. And so it's easier to have things like long fingernails, long hair, dainty high heels, tons of hanging jewelry, etc. Being physically active would mean easy to break a nail, hair get in the way, harder to maintain sweaty nasty tangled hair, break high heels, snap hanging jewelry, etc. Most guys are highly physically active, most girls not as much. And so you see girls mostly doing the things I described, like having long hair. Even girly emo guys do similar things girls do like having long hair, because they aren't usually heavily physically active, they spend time consentrating on their beauty, and long hair tends to make a pretty face look more feminine.
Girls who are pretty and not physically active spend a great deal of time prettying themselves up, which is why the Malls are dedicated to them. Heavily physically active guys tend to have short hair or be bald, don't wear dainty clothes, don't wear a lot of hanging jewelry, etc, because it's easier to be efficient physically like in boxing, to not have all that stupid hair in your face, etc.
So ofcourse if most people you see with long hair are pretty girls, not guys, it becomes a feminine thing.

I don't know that long hair is necessarily 'feminine" but on a woman, it tends to make THEM LOOK MORE feminine.
The Jesus guy, Plato and most of the Philosophers, and even guys right up to the 70s wore long hair.
Ive got semi long dreads (like St John the Baptist did), but when it comes to women I think some need the long hair while others can get away with going short. Personally, a shoulder length minimum on a woman is what I prefer.
It really depends on the femininity of the individual.
Same thing with "men". Some guys would look more like girls (if they had long hair) than they already do.

Not Samson, he let his hair grow shoulder lenght as that was the nazarite requirment.
Women love short hair on men so i guess that is the norm.
Personally i love shorter hair on women with the cute short bob haircuts..anything above the shoulders. I am interested in her mind and personality. I am not moved by cultural norm at all.
But yes long hair is sexy but if she doesn't have the rest of what i stated then it just doesn't work for a person. I can't see how it could.
Put it this way, if a woman had long beautiful hair but had the face of maggie thatcher then what the f/ck does it mean anymore? It just doesn't.

I guess long hair is considered flowy, graceful, and therefore, feminine. Short hair is considered masculine because I suppose strong men can't be seen as a female with long hair, can they? It doesn't really make sense, but modern trends and the evolution of fashion and style play a strong role in this too.

It's all a matter of social convention. Some cultures have men with long hair without any association with femininity.
Personally, I believe that most societies value a woman's beauty. A beautiful woman is believed to have greater worth than unattractive women. In fact, beauty is one of the few feminine virtues treasured by society. Because of this women work harder at presenting themselves as beautiful. Their hair becomes objects used to display their beauty. Their hair is their crown. Therefore women wear their hair long, and style it in different ways to enhance their beauty. Hence, long hair was just associated as a feminine characteristic.

I like short hair, i like to see a womans neck. I like to nuzzle a woman's neck. Hair gets in the way. If you want to wear ear rings , they don't go with long hair. I don't like to have my mate leaving hair all over the place. When having sex, long hair gets in the way and can sure spoil the mood., If you are asian and have really long straight hair to show off, I guess that is something to be proud of, But why? duhh!

I don't- I think its the style that long hair is worn in. So many rockers wer long, scruffy hair.
I'm a Genderqueer person- meaning that unlike most people, who know if they're male or female, my mental gender isn't clear. Its not easy for me to see myself as male or female. Its legit- its real. Its not made up.
When I'm feeling "en femme" (more female) I want shorter, styled hair.
When I'm feeling "en homme" (more male) I want long, scruffy, rock-star hair.
So I just wear it in the middle, in a style thats "unisex" and can be manipulated either way.
But men have been wearing their hair long for millenia. Its always been style more than length that determined if it was "male" or "female". Even in the era of "Macaroni" (the wigs) there were "men's style" and "ladies style". Men's tended to be more flamboyant. Pink was the man's colour, being a shade of red- a strong colour. Blue was subtle, and soft, and associated with feminine attributes.

It's undoubtedly cultural, and varies from society to society.
I have to say, though, for a cultural sexual element, it's very visceral - a woman almost always looks much better with long hair than with short hair, in my experience.
(Edit: I should mention that it can be overdone. I would call above the shoulder and especially above the neck 'short,' slightly longer than shoulder length ideal, and anything that's measured in multiple feet as 'oh, I forgot that I have hair to take care of' ;) )

It's something determined by the leaders of the societal herd. Next year they may decide it isn't Feminine. Personally, I don't say it is Feminine - but, on a Woman, it sure is sexy.
Added note: It could be a scheme Barbers are using to convince men to get hair cuts.
