The red eyes are part of the Black Swan which is the alter-ego of the White Swan. Combined, this makes the Swan Queen, which is the character Nina dances in the ballet.

The demonic red eyes are symbolic of her getting in touch with her evil, alter-ego in order to play the role of the black swan.

this is a brilliant film. nina, played by natalie portman is obviously obsessed with being the perfect ballerina. it consumes her life, not to mention that she is completely controlled by her mother, who is wacky. nina begins to lose touch with reality. she is innocent, like the character of the white swan and is therefore able to nail that role, however when it comes to portraying the black swan, she just cant let go and really consume the part. her dance instructor knows what a gifted dancer she is, but just pushes and pushes her to nail the part of the black swan, who needs to have that edge to her personality, which he feels nina just cant let go and bring put. not to mention, he is extremely hard on her and controlling also, so in comes lily(played by mila kunis), who is carefree, laid back, and a great and beautiful dancer. from the beginning, nina is suspicious and uneasy about lily. however, lily truly does only want to be nina's friend. lily sees how weak nina is and tries to support her, but nina constantly feels threatened by her, yet intigued by lily also. nina clearly suffers from mental illness. she is highly paranoid, dilusional, and as the movie roles on, we see just how sick she really is. what she was pulling out of her skin was imaginary feathers, and swan feathers, as she begins to actually envision herself as a swan by the end of the movie. this is when she has pretty much lost complete control of any kind of reality. she scratches and digs at her skin throughout the movie. her eyes becoming red like that also, are how she starts to see herself. almost, like a crazed swan. throughout the film, if you notice, she always sees a person or maybe lily, but when she looks, she sees herself. she never feels good enough, and her only care is to "perfect." which noone can be, of course, except for God. the whole fighting scene she is having with lily, is her imagination. she isnt fighting lily at all, she actually stabs herself. she dances the last act of her final performance with sheer perfection, and as she jumps into the mattress at the end, for the suicide scene in the ballet, she actually kills herself(from the stabbing). when her instructor asks her in a shocked voice what she has done to herself, she replies, "I was perfect!". therefore, in true sadness and shock, we, the audience, see that nina was finally able to achieve her perfection, but only through the sad, depressing reality of her death. although, this movie was extremely sad and depressing, it was also a great film that was wonderfully acted and the cast of characters were fantastic, as well as the storyline. Aronofsky, who directed this movie is a terrifci director,. check out "requiem for a dream" by him, also. very depressing, but grippingly real and great movie.

She doesn't really have red eyes. It is symbolic of her alter ego (i.e. the black feathers that grew during the ballet--were not real)

She could have had colored contact lenses given to her while preparing for her role that she subconsciously slipped in and out of her eyes. Many dancers who perform this role wear colored lenses.
