'phone networks "crashing" on NYE?

Every year people send me texts hours before midnight because, they say, the mobile networks will crash because they can't handle the volume of messages. I believe this to be an urban myth and that the networks don't crash at all - am I right?

They dont crash they just cant cope with the influx of messages and put them on hold until people stop being stupid, a bit like when a shop opens up its january sales and they all go running in, its just like closing the door.

  • In the uk they crash every year.
