Why would a god decree that Its followers circumcise their infant male children?

Circumcision involves cutting away the foreskin, flesh from the penis which contains thousands of nerve endings.

Even if a circumcision is performed flawlessly, it's a fact that this nerve tissue is forever lost, leading to reduced sensation during intercourse. If a circumcision is botched, it can lead to scarring and further inhibition of sexual pleasure.

Eventually, medical science may, through stem cell research, for example, enable circumcised men to essentially regrow damaged parts of their anatomy including the penis and foreskin, which many adult males who've been circumcised (myself included) would take advantage of.

It is true that not being circumcised means hygiene is a bit more important, and it's understandable that parents might be a bit squeamish about teaching their son how to clean his penis properly and keep it clean. In other words, some may argue there are practical reasons to circumcise, to make the parents' lives easier.

Conveniently, some religious doctrine states that their respective God insists upon circumcision to appease same.

If a god created us from single cells to walking, talking human beings, why would It then insist upon lopping part of the body off in infancy? Why not just eliminate the foreskin from birth, so that an infant need not go through the painful, bloody process of having this very sensitive tissue sliced away?

Update:

No Chance Without Jesus: Well, if you don't have a foreskin now, then how will you be able to know how much better sex *could* be without one to perform rigorous testing with?

Update 2:

Sips With A Fist: Seriously!! Who knows where on or in the goat that herder's hands, let alone knives, have been!

Those that have been cut will justify it using silly statistics.

Simply ask anyone who hasn't been cut if he wants to be cut. Thought so.

To the "hygiene" camp: if your finger gets dirty, do you clean it or cut it out?

All babies male and female start out female with a vaginal opening. The opening is completely covered to prevent amniotic fluids which contain fecal matter and urine from entering. When the proper hormonal key is received in gestation, the males penis grows through this covering and it becomes a foreskin. It is the hymen (cherry) on a female. Even today, most males don't know how to clean properly. Women tend to have constant yeast infections and other issues from sex with uncircumcised males. IT especially helps spread disease in places where clean water and hygienic materials are not readily available. It was removed for cleanness....and still is. Many women today will not have sex with someone uncircumcised due to this.

Would not have... The concept -- the creator telling its creation to cut off pleasure giving tissue is way out in irational land. Male circumcision is nerve damage -- a cutting off about 20000 fine touch and stretch sensing nerve endings and removing a source of pleasure from the male FOR LIFE. This is 2/3 of the total pleasure source amputated! This is nerves, blood vessels, protective covering and pleasure zones taken away from a human before the human can experience this. The dynamics and function and pleasure from sex and masturbation of the penis is harmed for good. The only touch organ possessing as rich erogenous innervation as the foreskin is the clitoris. Circumcision deprives man of 2/3ds of the main erogenous zone constituted of the foreskin and the glans.

BTW, it is actually easier to care for a natural penis child. You should know that infant boys are EASIER to care for when they are natural (intact). The foreskin does not retract until late childhood or even puberty, so you do nothing special, just wipe the outside of his penis clean and leave it alone. Furthermore, to prevent painful and bleeding erections later in life, doctors are now commonly leaving more skin behind- in a cut boy this means you may have to push the left over skin back at every diaper change and clean beneath it to prevent it from adhering or infecting. The very thing that mother's think they avoid by circumcising!

Personally, I don't believe that any god ever decreed that males should be subjected to genital mutilation, called circumcision.

Others can believe as they like, but in the Bible the story of an old man who heard voices and saw visions sounds to me like something else. First the voices told him to kill his son, and then at the last minute told him to mutilate his son's penis. In antiquity, individuals who were crazy, and heard voices and saw things that weren't there were considered,"touched by the gods."

Nowadays such an individual would be diagnosed as schizophrenic and considered a danger to himself or others.

No child, male or female, should have genital mutilation forced on them. Males should have equal protection under the law. If it's wrong to circumcise female minors, it's equally wrong to force genital mutilation on male minors.

Circumcision is a fraud and a hoax

A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.

It was a ceremonial law that God, gave to Israel in ancient times. There was never any intention for it to continue into the New Covenant. The Apostles did in fact stop those Jewish believers who held that new believers had to be circumcised in the years following the Ascension of our Lord. It hasn't been a requirement since the Old Covenant ended in 33 AD.

Never mind such a horrific practice with today's precision instruments, antibiotics and medical care. What about the use of ancient goat-herder's dull knives?

Many plausible answers could be provided, BUT, this one will suffice. The fact that the EIGHTH day was chosen IS SIGNIFICANT, in that the CLOTTING FACTORS are produced only by about the seventh day after birth.

YHWH/ JEHOVAH's choice of a circumcision as a sign of covenant for His CHOSEN people IS NOW NO LONGER A REQUIREMENT, now circumcision is of THE HEART, by spirit.

    Jeremiah 4:4 (American Standard Version)

4 Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

    Romans 2:28-29 (Young's Literal Translation)

    28For he is not a Jew who is [so] outwardly, neither [is] circumcision that which is outward in flesh;

29but a Jew [is] he who is [so] inwardly, and circumcision [is] of the heart, in spirit, not in letter, of which the praise is not of men, but of God.

God would never say such a thing. Why would he create men with a foreskin in the first place, just to have it snipped off? That would, firstly, imply that God made a mistake, and two, mean that our design (and I think we were created "in His image" ) is flawed.

Every to their own, my husband desired our son to be circumcised and that i told him definite, but he needed to arrange it and it needed to be executed when he used to be a new child. He failed to organize it so it wasn't performed.

Many millions of non Jewish men are circumcised. In my generation it was extremely common and even thought to be more hygenic. I believe that things have changed since then in terms of our understanding. I have no recollection of the procedure personally and it seems to have had no impact on me in any significant way.

Exactly why this was chosen I have no idea.
