Quality knives- OK for dishwasher?

I've been told that it is not good to put good kitchen knives in a dishwashing machine. Is this true, and if so, why?

Update:

I posted this question in this forum because I butcher my own game and I think others here do the same. Not really looking for answers from housewives, but from people who cut meat seriously.

A knife should never be placed in a dishwasher. Quality knives have mechanical as well as adhesive bonds for the handles and the heat from the dishwasher will weaken the adhesive bond as well as potentially damaging the handle if is is something such as wood. It should be hand washed in mild soapy water and thoroughly dried, nothing more.

I am a chef and a hunter from wyoming. It is never ok to put a knife, anything with a cutting edge or even a wooden handle in the dishwasher. It is a pain but you need to hand wash them. Dishwashers are the quickest way to ruin any cutting surface. The heat will ruin your wooden handles. Just the water hitting the edge of you knives will cause the blade to become folded over. Feel the blade and you will notice burrs. One cycle through the wash will dull your knife just as bad as cutting an elk from start to finish. Dishwashers are meant for dishes and pots and pans.

I would recommend keeping good knives out of the dishwasher. I bought an expensive set of global 'ikasa' knives last year, that have succumb to bad rust from the dishwasher

Dishwasher detergent is full of abrasives that will dull your knife and wear the finish. The water jets also cause them to bang into other utensils which also dulls them and damages the finish.

if for no other reason, to keep the knife sharper longer keep it out of dishwasher. keep good knives away from other utensils like in dishwasher and knife drawer-it's there worst enemies. protect the edge!
