Do you find it difficult to stick to your personal ethics?

Question

Do you sometimes find yourself wavering on your values because of other families you are in contact with?

Most recently a neighbor invited us to a birthday party with a petting zoo.  We have RSVPd no because we don't feel it is ethical to use animals as entertainment, especially those small gigs that don't treat the animals well at all and are just trying to make a buck.  I know we will be the only family in the neighborhood not going, but we feel our personal ethics and values are more important than attending this party.

Have you ever had a similar situation?

I have not problem sticking to my ethics and values.  One key thing I do more than most, is I leave room to adjust and re-evaluate them based off input.  Most pick a set of values and stick to them no matter what.  I dont think that is how it should work, I am constantly re-evaluating my definition of what is right.

if i had trouble sticking to them then presumably they weren't really my ethics to begin with, or at least not very strongly-held ones.

i can't think of an example where i felt pressured to do something i thought was morally suspect because of what someone else's family was doing.

No, not really.  It's not that difficult to say no.

If you don't support this particular party, it isn't the end of the world if you opt to do something else on that day.

I keep my ethics firm, even when other people think Im a snob or a total biiiotch.

Who cares what some neighbor may think, you're the one you have to live with forever, not them.
