Electrical voltage at home sockets varies?

In my home I measured some of the sockets to be at 44 volts and one other to be at 200 volts. Is this a major problem?

Yes it is a very serious problem.

    Start with the basics first.

First check the voltages coming into the house.

    Be careful.

remove the panel off the circuit breaker box.

With a volt meter check main feeds

Line 1 to ground ===> should be between 110 vac and 120 vac

Line 2 to ground ===> should be between 110 vac and 120 vac

Line 1 to Line 2 ===> should be between 210 vac and 240 vac

If they are not the problem is with your electric supplier and they have to fix it.

If they are, you may have some bad breakers and need to replace them.

Or you have a loose connection some where in the house that has corroded.

The signal presented by utilizing a wall sockey is termed AC for alternating modern. this suggests the signal differences from 0 upward, backdown; then even dips negitive earlier going as a lot as 0 back. because the voltage does replace like that, and maximum living house equipment employ an general of that signal; the price at a particulair second isn't truly severe. more suitable significant is the speed at which this wavy signal differences; it truly is kept very secure.

Ummm yes it is a problem. Are you sure its not the operator. If not sounds like you have an arcing short somewhere in a junction box. Do you have an old home with knob and tube wiring run into a large junction box with new nm-b coming out? I've seen arcing between wire nuts causing this problem. Usually you get 120 on both sides of the plug though. Are you in the US?

If you are in the USA, then 'Alekat' is absolutely correct. This is a problem with the neutral. Get your local power company out immediately.

Get your computers and other sensitive electronics unplugged right away. Don't forget stoves, washers, dryers, and refers if they have digital displays.

Look for a bad/loose neutral. Main panel - meter socket - service entrance?
