Would this be totally cruel?

I got a betta fish about a week ago, and he's developed fin rot.  Actually I think he had it just a little when I got him and it got worse in the stress of moving him to a new tank.  But anyway, I know it's fairly common and fairly easy to cure, but here's my question:

Is it worthwhile to pay $15 for antibiotics to cure a fish that cost $2?

This is common so your better to buy antibiotics, if you get another it may also happen. It will cure after a few doses and water changes.

Yes it would be totally cruel, yes it's worthwhile to buy the antibiotics. 
It is ones responsibility to care for ANY living creature that one obtains, regardless of how little the pet cost or how much the treatment might. 

However, you don't need antibiotics to cure fin rot. What you do need is perfect water, and a proper setup for your fish. 

If your fish is in a cycled, 5+ gallon aquarium, complete with a gentle filter and a heater set at ~80 degrees, your Bettas fins should heal by themselves. 
If something's missing from his housing/care, then it's your responsibility to fix it.

The cure to fin rot is crystal clear water.  You could also add some salt to the tank to help heal its fins.  I think for bettas it is 4 teaspoons per 10 gallons of water.

So no, I don't think you should spend your money on antibiotics.  It is about 2.50 for kosher salt from the local grocery store.  Or 4.00 from the lfs.

Yes, I believe it is worthwhile. It's something that feels pain, it's aware of it's surroundings. How would you feel if you got hurt and your parents didn't want to spend $15 on your antibiotics. Just get the antibiotics, and you'll have your betta fish for years.

its not just the cost of the fish, but the time you spent getting the supplies for it and feeding it, so the $2 of the actual fish is actually probably worth $150.   so then $15 is probably worth it.

I personally believe that every life is precious no matter how much the animal costs, and I'd do everything in my power to help the animal survive comfortably and healthily.

have you fallen in love with him yet ? if no then see if the store will take him back or try giving it to someone who cares if have fallen in love with him your bond is priceless so you should spend ANYTHING on him just saying
