A question to Atheists about evidence?

I have already asked a similar question to Theists with unsurprising results (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am4Vy... So in the interest of fairness, lets open up the debate.

What would you accept as evidence of a God?

I am Atheist so for me it would be a planet without suffering. I would be grateful for all answers regardless of if someone has already posted a similar answer.

Many thanks for all polite answers.

Update:

@Sarah - Whilst I accept that a planet without suffering would indeed only really be evidence of a planet without suffering, It would be so beyond the realms of possibility that I would have to accept that a consciousness beyond my understanding would have to be responsible. Yes, this would make me guilty of an argument from ignorance but suffering is my main evidence that shows there isn't a compassionate God as advertised by the major religions.

Update 2:

@Greg - Please name something good that came about through suffering and how that suffering was necessary, proportionate and justified. I would also be grateful if you can explain how that something could not have come about without said suffering.

Update 3:

@ronald r - Actually, it's short for Astaroth Death Squirrel. No hidden agenda, just a pet name that sometimes gets shortened to Astaroth and sometimes Astaroth Squirrel. I guess you can't even be a little quirky without people thinking you have an agenda.

Update 4:

@ignoramus_the_great - Some great leaps there. "which component is missing in the world you see?" The bit that stops all the suffering. It's not rocket science.

I can think of lots of things that would at least provide some credible objective evidence. Amputees that prayed to a specific god to be healed being so and only those that prayed for such to that particular deity. Jesus descending and rapturing Christians up into the heavens as some of them claim will occur. All the people on the planet suddenly getting consistent and compatible messages about religious dictates the nature of such a being. Stuff like that.

I am a Christian, so I will butt in for a moment, as I didn't get in on the "unsurprising" answers you received there. The suffering here is a result of man's rebellion against God. If you would use critical thinking, you would see that if we were to all actually follow the teachings of Jeshua the Messiah, there wouldn't be worldwide suffering on this planet. God has promised "theists" that He will one day regenerate the earth and it will be a planet without suffering. That would be the proof.

Your screen name denotes an agenda, of sorts, Astaroth, in demonology, is a Crowned Prince of Hell. He is a male figure named after the Canaanite goddess Ashtoreth. That seems peculiar to me.

The "Holy Spirit" also provides irrefutable proof. If you actually want "proof, accept the Holy Spirit. No other god does this. The atheists who want proof will not accept the proof. Once the Holy Spirit enters your being, your doubts are forever vanquished. Ask any former born-again atheist.

I don't necessarily know that there is ever proof-which is why it is called faith. I don't personally believe there is a god but if there is I definitely know that it is not the God of Christian Doctrine and here is why:

Christianity holds the following to be true; God is all knowing, God is all good, God is all powerful, God is everywhere. If all of those are true there is absolutely no way to explain Stalin (or any other person that has committed absolute atrocities to humanity). The argument Christians will shoot back is "free will" but my question would then be-sure it was Hitler's free will, but why wasn't God protecting those in the Gulags then?

I view Christianity as a philosophy-and a damn good one that I try to live my life by. I personally feel that the deism of Christianity came from a series of convenient mistranslations that were never corrected by the only individuals that were educated for about 1000 years because the mistranslations served their own purposes too much.

There isn't any evidence of god, he's a man or woman in a e-book with one hundred models of the equal unhappy tale There is nonetheless proof that there are planets within the universe that may preserve existence, that orbit round a celebrity similar to earth. so it's viable that there's or would had been a few variety of existence on those planets, which by means of definition could be alien existence, although its only a tree or a trojan horse. that is intriguing, no longer unhappy.

Hmmm, Christian here. You say a planet without suffering, which is the same as saying no evil in the world. No evil in the world implies either neutrality in the world, or love and goodness in the world. I take it then that if only love and goodness existed in the world, then God exists. Going further, wherever love and goodness exists, God exists. I take it that love and goodness is a proof that God exists.

Looking at your statement again. A planet without suffering could be a planet with no chaos. No chaos implies order and truth. I take it then that order and truth implies God exists.

Looking again at your statement. A planet without suffering would be a planet without fear. No fear implies faith and power. I take it then that faith and power implies God exists.

Now in this compound equation of love and goodness, order and truth, faith and power, which component is missing in the world you see?

I'm not an atheist, but I wanted to say that many very good things would not exist if there wasn't suffering. The question of suffering is one of the biggest topics in theology, the subject is even debated in the book of Job (believed to be the oldest book of the Bible), and pondered heavily by the author of Ecclesiastes.

Have you considered pondering why God would allow suffering, and what *wouldn't exist* if there was none? Suffering is something every theist grapples with, and what I have found is that many good things we take for granted would be completely non-existent if not for suffering.

Something to think about. Try imagining what we wouldn't have if there was never any suffering. A thought experiment for you.

I'm don't understand how a planet without suffering would be evidence that a God exists.

In fact, I'm not even sure how that would work. People seem to find happiness or contentment quite boring. Hence the interest in soap operas, murder mysteries, etc.

Actually, now that I think of it, there's a short story where robots have been programmed to make sure that there is not human suffering. And the only way that they can find to do this is to kill everyone.

Actually, the evidence for an uncreated creator, a first cause, some sentience that set the universe in motion? I'd need only the smallest nudge, the merest hint, that such is needed to initiate a causal reality (a reality, like ours, in which causes necessarily precede effects).

However, to convince me that this uncreated creator cares more about this speck of dust among the the trillions of stars and planets out there, that it cares about our species so much, it concerns itself with our consensual sexual behaviors, our use of intoxicants, and even (according to some) are modes of dress, that it would condemn humans to eternal torment for a mere thought crime of disbelief? To believe in that, I would need a long personal interview with this being, during which it could satisfactorially explain the reasons behind such odd behavior for an unmoved mover.

    Proof that/of:

    • Extraneous factors to physics can happen.

    • The separation of those factors and physics (like oil is to water).

    • The factors have a physics albeit different and unique from ours.

    • Physical constraints are affected by the separate reality.

    • The reality is intelligent; organised like a kind of brain.

    • The reality opened up physical constraints allowing for the big bang to occur.

Well, real documentation of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus would be a start. The gospels are too far removed, too biased, and too unsubstantiated to count as evidence.

I guess there's two types of evidence we could ask for here. We could ask for evidence that Christians could possibly give us, and evidence that God could give us in the event he exists. At this point, I don't think there is any evidence for Christians to provide that could give credibility to religion. God, on the other hand, could prove his existence pretty easily if he chose to.
