why does my 13 month old get scared of certain people?

My son is 13 months old and has just started to get scared of certain people for no reason. he has always taken 5/10 mins to get used to seeing someone during which time he sits on my knee but is then usually fine. But in the past 2 weeks every time he sees my best friends mum ( whom he has seen a lot and used to goto on his own accord) he starts crying hysterically. He is absolutely terrifies. He only has to see her for a second and he is in tears... he was that bad last time he started screaming. Yet when we went somewhere he had never been before he was more than happy and went upto my friends bf's mum with no problem.... I dont get it?!

Serious answers only please.

Update:

no hes never been left alone with her but he used to love being around her. Chocolate doesnt work and ive tried holding him and telling him he is ok and that im there but after 10 minutes of him screaming he starts to strugle to get breath so i have to take him away from her. it still takes him 5 mins to calm down once he cant see her as well.

It's called making strange. It happens at different times for different babies.. sometimes more than once. There isn't much you can do other than comfort the child and try to keep the person they are scared of at a good distance until they calm down again at least. My daughter did the same thing at 4 months old with all her grandparents and some close friends she had seen a bunch.. and again at 7 months. She's a year now and I'm thinking she is going to go through it again. They get over it in their own time. One day you could get him up and he could be perfectly fine with your best friend's mum again out of no where!! :)

Best of luck and congrats on your mummyhood :)

Source(s): My daughter did the same thing with the trouble breathing and even would hold her breath sometimes and for the life of me I couldn't calm her down until the person was out of sight too.. it really does pass :) Don't worry!!

Has she ever watched him for you while you pop out or even go to the loo? Maybe he thinks that you are leaving him with her and are going away from him? Maybe next time you see this lady you give her a hug and be affectionate towards her, it may help him not see her as a threat. Also don't react by taking him away from her but just calm him and say 'Mummy's here, I've got you' so he feels safe. If you remove him or she leaves it will reinforce the idea that she is someone to be scared of. Or she could give him some chocolate buttons or something he loves.

My son cries whenever he hears the song 'You're Gorgeous' by babybird. No idea why. They are funny little creatures sometimes but they do grow out of it if you don't let it become an issue.

As a document, I might say what you may have for certain, pricey lad, is: Hypochondriasis - an immoderate fear related to a significant health problem. All tumors are infrequent in youngsters. Your signs are a constellation of many who would be from practically some thing (I might suppose meningeal involvement or enchephalitis earlier than a tumor). Many lots (whether or not malignant or non cancerous) that seem within the mind will reward with an excessively debilitating symptom (seizures, dizziness to the factor of close fainting, severe nausea and vomiting main to dehydration, and extreme imaginative and prescient deficits which might be most likely dangerous adequate to search cure from an ophthalmologist). The tingle is commonly localized idiopathic paresthesia (numbness of unknown foundation). The neurological signs most likely as a result of altered neurotransmitters probably secondary to nervousness. The blending phrases is most likely realistic dyslexia or apprehensive phrase substitution as a result of nervous distraction. Medically, I suppose you will have to get a head CT, or a minimum of a head radiograph (xray) simply to position your self cozy greater than another purpose. Anxiety can be debilitating and it would not be well to get addicted to benzodiazepines which my support however would offset mind chemistry extra. A CT is high-priced so if cash is an dilemma get a head/neck radiograph. You too can see an Ophthalmologist who can discover abnormalities in imaginative and prescient and within the eye itself which outcomes as a rule from tumor (that is not likely)... Email me by way of the website online if in case you have any longer questions.... PS - I concentrate on Surgery/Anesthesiology/Virology(Microbio... and Emerging Infectious Disease)Epidemiology

because some people are scary i guess, lol. Seriously, my son who is now 2.5 never ever wanted anything to do with anyone but mommy or daddy. Not even grandma or grandpa. Now that he's in daycare and socialized it's getting better but he still shys away from some people for no reason. Don't push him into being held or whatever from people he's scared of, just assure him that "so and so is a friend and we love friends". He'll get over it.

Something may have happened (something every small and innocent - like a fly crawled across her arm) which scared him, he now associates the fly with her and therefore is scared of her.

It's usually as simple as that.

Take him to a pastor for prayers. Who knows he is going to be a seer!

This happens, and there often is no explanation. It isn't unusual.
