Should their be minimum national standards for education?
Should every student in the US be able to meet the same minimum standards by the time they complete their education? If so what should those standards be?
I feel that each student should be able to write well enough to express their opinions on 5 different topics of conversation. Someone reading what they have written should be able to summarize their opinion without the student having to correct anything that was misinterpreted verbally.
I feel that each student should be able to read well enough to read the US Constitution and understand what it means without having to have it explained to them.
I feel that each student should be able to balance a checkbook, make a budget, and calculate interest without having an app for that.
I feel that each child should have a basic understanding of the human body and the environment around them, including an understanding of how to maintain their bodies and the environment to prevent the death of themselves or the species and life forms around them.
I feel each student should have enough knowledge of each subject to allow them to move into any college level field of study they choose without needing to waste time in remedial classes to catch up. i.e. enough understanding of science to take and pass chemistry, enough understanding of math to take and pass algebra, etc.
Anyone agree or have more ideas?
I'm sure those who disagree will chime in as well.
Texan, I think that it is an indication that your education system should find a way to adapt to meet the needs of their students, rather than trying to adapt their student population to what they feel like teaching. Every child who does not have a developmental disability is capable of learning anything, it is up to their educators to find a way to teach it to them.
Brock, setting a national standard does not mean that there is only one way to reach that standard. Each child is an individual and capable of learning subject material in either one of the three styles of learning or some combination of those styles. It is my belief that the Federal government should set the standards each student must meet, and then it is up to the educators to teach the information. Stop trying to find a one size fits all method of educating students, and start adapting the instruction to the needs and strengths of the kids learning it. If you do that, the vast majority of those students will be able to show their knowledge of that information on standardized tests no matter where they live. There is no biological difference between a child from Florida and a child from Alaska that states they cannot learn and retain the same information.

That is a very good plan and I am inclined to agree with you. However, setting national standards for many of those things would be very complicated and the tests would be very time-consuming. If someone can figure out a way to accurately test a student's ability in all of these areas, I would be all for it. One of the greatest skills which so many students fail to learn in their schooling is Critical Thinking, and there needs to be more emphasis on this important skill.

I feel that every student should have reached the level of education you describe by the time they get to high school. Like they do in just about every other modern nation on the planet.

If we have to have a understanding of the body I would fail. I once forgot which side the heart was on.
But as for the check book and budget they should at least teach that more or better.

Here in Harris county they are producing high school grads that can not read English above the 4 th grade level. Most can not speak english when enrolled. Do you think its a relation?
