how to get my dogs claws trimmed?

My dog will not let anyone near her paws, not just for claw trimming, she doesn't let anyone touch her paws at all. When she was a puppy I had to hold her while the vet trimmed, well 3 years and 80 lbs later, that is no longer an option. Last time at the vet, I tryed my hardest to hold her down, but then she started snapping at the vet, so we had to muzzle her then she squirmed so much and backed herself into the wall and I had to hold the top part of her body up so she didn't kill the vet and even then he couldn't cut as much as was needed and now looking at her nails all that stress we put on her and it didn't help at all and was completle pointless. I am making an appt w/ a different vet tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else had this kind of trouble clipping a big dogs claws and if you have found a way of doing it w/o stressing out the dog so much. Any advice would be great and what should I expect a vet to do to be able to get them clipped. Obviously the last vet didn't have the experience to deal w/ a dog that squirmish w/ nail trimmings.

Update:

Lee-your comment was incredibly rude and unnecessary. My dog is not vicious, Se is very well behaved and trained. She is just very sketchy when it comes to her paws. I did make the last vet aware of her paw issues before he tried to trim her nails so he was on guard. 80 lbs is not that easy to restrain when she is freaked out, and clearly the vet did not get bit, so I couldn't have been that bad at it.

let the new vet the history of the nail trim nightmare, they may decide to give your dog some sort of tranquilizer to make your dog more likely to accept the trimming. the vet should have technician's that are trained to hold for the vet. it is possible the vet may choose to take your dog to the procedure room to trim nails.they should not expect you to hold your dog, they get paid to do this sort of thing. hope this helps

Ha, Ha, your such an irresponsible person, blaming the vet for YOUR vicious dog. I hope the next vet throws you right out. If YOU can't control your dog, why the heck would you expect a Stranger to be able to do it? Especially with your inept attempts to restrain your dog almost get the vet hurt.

I'll tell you what your dog needs, she needs 1. Training and 2. SEDATION. Call the vet ahead of time, tell them that your dog has been very aggressive in the past and may need to be sedated. Its important because they may need your dog to come in at a different time or have her fasted before she comes in. It is morally reprehensible (that means very wrong) that you are blaming someone else for your own failures in training.

All I'm saying is that when MY pet tried to bite Me during a nail trim I worked on Training him. I worked with him every night for months (and yes, I have a full time job) and now I can do it with him, alone. No biting. This is not the vet's failure, as much as you might want to make it about someone else besides yourself. When someone goes into the ER and then punches the doctor or nurse, whose fault is that? Is it the fault of the person trying to give the medical care or the fault of the person doing the punching? Why don't you just do this at home by yourself if You are such an expert at telling other people that your dog is a nice puppy and they are bad at their job? 99% of people are capable of doing this, why can't you? Is it something about your specific dog that is the Problem?

Ask the vet to give her a shot of preanesthetics. It will not be as intense as anesthesia because she will not need the breathing tube and stuff. But a preanesthetic will make her sleepy and kind of out of it.

It is hard when they do not like nail trimming to this extent, espically at her size. But at the place I work we will give a dog preanesthetic in order to trim them because it can be harmful if their nails get too long and begin to curl under. We often try the holding tightly and muzzling first, but then use preanesthetic if needed. Where I work we have had to do that quite often because the dogs come from abusive places and will bite and squirm. It is also less stressful on the dogs with the medication.

I'm a dog groomer and we get alot of dogs in at work with this problem. You can try and be really fast and cut when she jumps but there's more risk of cutting her. Take her to a groomer. If they can't do it and a vet can't do it she may have to be sedated, which is alot of trouble just to get their nails clipped. So as the other person said, walk her on the pavement to file them down,

The vet could give the dog a strong sedative to quiet her down, or put her out entirely and do it like he would do an operation or pull teeth, that way the dog wouldn't know what happened after waking up. Or maybe a good, experienced groomer might be able to do the job. Good luck.

If you're really unable to train this dog to stand and have her nails clipped, spend a half hour or so each day walking on the pavement...it should file them down nicely for her and you won't need to worry about it past that.

well if you think you can manage to cut the nails, you need to buy a dog nail cutter.

but, if you can't, you have to bring your dog to a vet or a dog groomer to cut it for you.

If you cannot do it, just take it to the vet. They can do a nice job.
