x (the letter) is a commonly used variable; if you use it as a multiplication sign, you might get confused, since writing a variable right next to a number (or another variable) is a common way of showing multiplication
example;
If you mean 6 times some number "x", write 6x or 6*x (or use a raised dot)
If you write 6xx, people will think you mean 6 times some number "x" squared.

X is the most common variable used
Perhaps the teacher means don't use the x any more to show multiplication.

because "x" is the most commonly used variable
you should use * for the multiplication symbol
example:
you have $5.00. How many candy bars can you buy if a candy bar costs $1.25
let x = number of candy bars
1.25 * x = 5
this would be your equation, if you used x as the multiplication sign then:
1.25 x x = 5 (very hard to understand)

"x" is itself a common variable in math, so it could be confusing to use it to mean multiplication.
If I write "xxy", do I mean "x times y" or "x times x times y"?
