Know what the problem with mental health screenings for gun buyers are?
Not every crazy person is crazy all the time. They can be sane and rational when they buy the gun, then go home and lose their job, turn to and develop a taste for methamphetamines, turn their brain cells to jello, and then remember that gun they have in the closet.
Same thing with background checks. You can buy a gun at what, 18? What if you don't get around to deciding to be a violent criminal until you're 25?
What exactly is the solution for restricting gun ownership only to those persons who are sane and responsible enough to be trusted not to use them stupidly?
And yes I know the whole drunk driver comparison, spare me. I've got a better chance of avoiding a drunk driver in a 2000 pound automobile than I do a bullet fired by a nutjob whose hiding out playing GI Joe behind a tree.

It's really simple, try to live where there are lots of stable living wage jobs.
If you live in a paranoid state where people have too much leeway to be crazy and nobody notices because they would give themselves away if they pointed this out to certain authorities.
Desperate people who are ignored and ostracized by society in general by conservative ideology or it's kissing cousin, religious intolerance tend to have a lot of anger issues that originate from being marginalized by selfish me-first corrosive conservative social regulations and attitudes which constantly saturate the corporate-friendly US media monopoly that loves low wages and hates worker rights.
A fail-safe psychological profile test might be an ideal method, but I'm certain that neanderthal knuckle-dragger gun-nuts and the gun lobby such as the NRA, would be violently opposed to any test that might exclude anyone from being able to possess a gun, much less qualify for a credential that would make their life-style sanity a cogent litmus test for gun purchasing as a privilege, vs. their insistence that gun ownership is a "right", like breathing and unsupervised hatred of liberal straw-men.

I love the idea of mental health screenings for gun buyers. It might not stop a situation you describe, but it will help at least stop someone who is having a bout of crazy at the moment and is on an impulsive suicide mission. Like the AZ guy and the VT guy.

Not really, your chances of getting hit by a drunk driver or dieing a bath tub by slipping and falling are higher than being hit by an American bullet. The reality is that freedom is paid by a high cost. Maybe we should ban bathtubs, cigarette's, recreational sex, guns, boxing, sky diving, river rafting or any other freedom we have. Except guns provide a protected right of self defense. The others are not a right.

Unfortunately the solution is a central national data base containing the names of those who have been adjudicated as mentally ill and dangerous or have lost the right to purchase weapons due to mental illness.

To purchase a gun in the US (or anything for that matter, including strained rice), I think you should be required to present a certificate of manicure screening as well. The more working class money for US plutocrat regulators, US rich class legal industrial complex, and US gun manufacturers, the better.

So as much as I love fire arm freedom take their guns away.
It makes them have a harder time getting weapons. I do not have a problem with it. But the police like Sheriff Dupnik do not do their jobs so it is of little help.

How about screenings for people becomming parents? If you cant teach your kid right from wrong, then you dont deserve one. Maybe if the parents of Columbine involved themselves a bit more, that wouldnt of happened. Blame people, not the guns.

true...its only crazy people that have been CAUGHT and booked as being crazy that might have problems buying guns
but people often ignore *crazy* people so they slip through the cracks
that said...if guns are outlawed..only outlaws(and people that know them) would have guns
