ok here's the situation. I know that it is illegal to record music off video games for personal use. Is there anyway that I can purchase the music from video games or how would I go about getting the music legally?

Use a service such as Itunes, Rasphody, or some other music service that you pay per song download. Many games release sound tracks and you can buy them from online music retailers.
