What are issues that a lawyer is needed to solved, but you think should be much easier to do yourself without a lawyer? ?

I can think of no "do it yourself" legal matters that make sense.  People sign contracts, make arrangements, agree on child support and visitation, and everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and then these same people end up retaining legal counsel to straighten out what went wrong PLUS solve the original problem.  "Should" is an all encompassing word.  People complain about the high cost of Family Court matters.  Family Court is user friendly.  Probate Court is user friendly.  Auto accidents?  Restraining Orders?  Arrests?  Retain counsel.

Problems with neighbors.  If you and the neighbor are willing to talk politely but directly about any issues you are having with each other, you can likely avoid having to turn the issue over to a lawyer to solve, and the cost of hiring the lawyer.
