How exactly did the Republican Party start?

I get so confused with both parties always going back and forth on issues. Why can't everyone just be one party?

    The Republican party can trace back to the 1850's and have been the primary opposition to the Democratic Party since. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President (elected in 1860).

    The reason there is not just one party is because people (and the parties) have different political philosophies that result in disagreements on certain issues. While issues change over the years, the underlying philosophies remain, which means there will always be disagreements on certain issues.
