What is causing pipe noise when I turn off the water?
Sometimes, when I turn off the hot water from my kitchen or bathroom sink, I hear gargling and sometimes knocks in the pipes. Noise happens only when the water is shut off. I tried turning off the main water and draining all the water from the pipes but it still happens. Cold water is fine.. We have a tankless water heater and I tried reducing the water on the unit also.
Thanks for the responses. For my bathroom faucet, I adjusted the hot water to come out more slow and that stopped the noise, but i can't adjust the kitchen faucet. The noise doesn't happen as much when I turn the water off slower. I notice it more when other people are using the hot water because they don't' remember to turn it off slow. Is installing a water arrester something I can do myself?

It's caused by air in the lines. Usually water pipes have a short piece that runs vertically above the faucet in the wall that allow a place for the air to go. For more information check this out.

Assuming you mean in the supply pipes rather than the drain pipes - it's called water hammer darling. You can fit a device to stop it or you can try resiting the pipes. Does it still do it it you turn off the tap very slowly?
It's best to try to stop it if you can because sometimes it can cause joints to fail in the pipe.
