Windows 7 Product Key?
I have a 3 year old HP desktop system. The hard drive crashed last summer and since it was a well-equipped machine I decided to replace the drive and have the OS upgraded from XP to Windows 7. I didn't use it much after that because I'd just bought a new laptop. Two weeks ago it froze up on my daughter while running a game. I was able to restart it and bring Windows up with much difficulty...but it would freeze up in 5 or 10 minutes. I took it back in to the same computer repair place where I'd got the drive replaced. They had it over a week then called and said they'd need to reinstall Windows and needed to know what to back up for me. I told them. Three days later they called back and said they need the disc to get the product key off of it. I told them I never received the disc. I have the other things they sent home with me the day I picked up the machine after drive replacement but no disc. Also, they told me their tech never adhered the product key sticker to the case like he normally would. I asked them if they can retrieve the product key from the registry and they're telling me it can be done but not easily. Does this sound accurate? Isn't there a quick way this can be done?

I don't think Windows 7 has a product key on the disc. That would be self defeating, since anyone could use the disc. Your key sticker should have been on the box or card inside the box, Windows came in.Since the repairman lost it, I would have him or the shop replace it with another OS, at their cost.
And from now on, write down the 25 digit code,( Key) somewhere, so that you have a copy of it. They are supposed to stick that sticker on the back of the computer.
If they can get the key from the registry, they should do it ,at their cost. It was their fault for losing it.
It sounds to me like they are trying to run you around. Make sure you don't pay for anything more then getting it running, and not for another key. At least, I wouldn't do it.
The Windows discs I have didn't come with product keys on the disc. The key came separate, on a sticker, so that it could be pasted onto the computer case. That is the reason for the sticker, for repair and to register and activate Windows. If it was on the disc, and you lost the disc, you would lose your key.

Yes it can be done. For a computer repair place I do not think it would be considered "not easily".

Try using Keyfinder. It can tell you the product key in seconds. Get it from this link.
