My boss hates me and wants me gone?

I've been working at this grocery store as a produce clerk for about 3 years now (since I was 15). It's my first job, and unfortunately me and my boss never really warmed up to each other. For the first couple years things went alright, I was in school and worked weekends while my boss worked weekdays so I only rarely saw him. But since I graduated last year and I'm now working 40 hours a week, the guy just really seems like he wants to get rid of me.

Yesterday I got called to the managers office and got reamed on for about 10 minutes about how I need to shape up and be more efficient, he tells me the only reason he's kept me around thus far is because he rarely saw me during school, but now that I'm basically full time he see's me as a weak link.

It really pisses me off because he really stressed how he wants to see me speed up and be more efficient, yet day to day he never really says anything about it to me. And It's almost as if he tries to avoid me most of the time and only talks to me when he has something he wants done.

Anyways what worries me the most about this is that if I were to try to get another job, guaranteed he'll give me a piss poor reference, I'm going to university next year, and my original plan was to quit this job and go travel for 6 months, but I decided to take an LOA instead, so I'll be sticking around town until September. I'm thinking my best bet would be to try and switch department's so I could use the store manager as a reference instead of produce, but honestly I really hate this job and just want out. What do you guys think?

Perhaps you're not really suited to retail. A manager is not really supposed to be constantly talking to you (day to day) simply because you are not the only employee and managers have many non-employee related tasks to perform to keep their own job

You said your boss made you go? If this is for career development, stick it out! Its a job and its only another 2 months or so. The experience will be good for you and will make your future stronger by strengthening your life experiences which lood good on a cv. This in turn will make you more employable, which has to be good for you, your girlfriend and your child! I know it must be tough, being away from family can be hell, but when its for everybodys benefit in the long run...Theres nothing you can do about the climate bar buying another jumper : ( But when it comes to food, that should be easy to over come! There are loads of american imports in the large super markets! Cook food that you are used to and like! If you really really cant take it, explain everything to your boss and ask about giving your notice, but if you can stick it out, then stay! Maybe they could come visit you? This is up to you in the end, we all have to do things we dont like, it just depends on how much more you can take? Just dont forget to think ahead a bit, theres an economic slowdown in the international markets, if you go home will you have a job? This is a really difficult situation for you, and its a pity its like this! I hope everything works out for you, whatever you decide!!

Ask yourself this question. Could you be quicker and more efficient? Take a long hard look at how you view the job and how you perform day to day. No BS and no lying to yourself. Do you do your best? Or just enough to get by?

If you are doing your best then nothing will please him and you should move to a different area or leave.

If you are not giving the job your all, then you can't blame the guy for being annoyed.

Hope it works out for you.

Have you ever stopped to think that the fault may lie with you?

Judging by the intemperate language in your question ("got reamed", "piss poor", "pisses me off") I would not be at all surprised!

    Watching your language might help!

Beat him with a rake until the candy flies out.

    then have him fire you.

    that way you get paid.
