What is the attraction to energy drinks?

I don't GET why people are hooked on these things. With all the heart problems and etc that they are said to cause, I just don't get it. Why not just drink a coffee or pop?

Trust me, I was going through this same question a few weeks back myself. Then, I found myself with a 3000 word essay too close to a deadline and needed to do a lot of work on it fast, and energy drinks became pretty much the only option to buy the extra time I'd wasted away (my bad entirely). I got the essay done in time, but couldn't sleep so I needed more to keep me awake. end result, four days in a row awake. not an experience I'd do again, if given a choice, but I digress.

I suppose the real attraction is that they usually pack a whole lot more punch than coffee, usually about 50-75% more caffeine, I think (my maths is atrocious, I'll admit), as well as sugars and other lovely stuff like taurine and whatnot. I mean, sure, coffee tastes and smells great in the morning, but it's very mild in comparison to the high you get from the energy drinks. the downside to that is that it's far easier to get intoxicated off energy drinks than coffee.

It's all a mental thing. When I think coffee I don't get excited or think of energy. When I hear energy drink I think oh snap I'm super hyped, this thing has my energy maxed. It doesn't, but if I believe it then so what.

Also there is no studies that have determined the real side effects of these. The weird ingredients in them have not been fully studied.

Energy drinks are a quick fix. If i'm tired and I have loads of things to do. I might not have time to make a coffee. It's quicker to just buy an energy drink from the store and, drink it along the way. Besides, it's quicker to drink cold drinks than hot drinks.

Hi Drew, I guess it is just a matter of taste (or the lack of it) Anything that goes into food and drink has to be tested to prove it is not harmful, or contain a warning if too much has known side effects. I'd sooner have a cup of tea myself being a Brit. All the best. Rab

I don't really drink energy drinks but my father does. He says all the time that they are really good. People like it because of the sugar and the energy that they really give you. But they are not healthy at all.
