Throwing your garbage away in fast food restaurants?

Personally I don't belieave in throwing away your garbage in fast food restaurants because there are people paid to do this and if we do it ourselves they get to think it isn't thier job and get lazy, plus the management cuts staff because this is not needing to get done. I beleive by doing this for them, in the long run, it reduces jobs and hours for people. I have worked in several fast food restaurnats as a cahier and part of my job was to clear tables. It was never a question in my mind that it was part of my job. I preferred people to leave their stuff actually because it made it easier to know which tables to wash off as well to ensure a clean place for the next customer. If we were very busy, we still managed to have someone get out there and clean it...we worked hard, worked as a team and there were enough people working to get the job done. (I am talking 20 yrs since I worked in fast food in my early 20's)

Now that I've said how I feel about it, this is a discussion come up by many people I know who now work in fast food trestaurants, but these people I know were complaining that customers don't clean thier tables and that it isn't thier job to clean up after the customers. I told them what I thought and they didn't agree sighting that when they were busy it was hard to get to cleaning the tables, so the customers should do it and that it was polite and considerate to the staff as well as other customers.

They say there isn't enough staff to take care of cleaning the tables too.

I'm not trying to start a debate and I don't care either way what your answer is.... I'm simply curious as to which way you think about it, if you have ever or do work in a fast food restaurant and if as a customer you do or do not clean the table after your use.

So lets hear your answers.... Thanks

I think you should clean up your own mess. I always wipe the table down with napkins if there is ketchup or something else that I spilled. I worked in fast food as a teenager and know how it feels to be constantly cleaning up after lazy slobs.

I never worked in a fast food restaurant. My husband did, though. He didn't mind going out and cleaning up after people. This is about ten years ago, though. He said the only time he had an issue with it was when people got really disgusting, blowing their noses in napkins and not throwing them away, wiping mustard/mayo/ketchup on the seats, tables, or walls. However we still gather up and throw our trash away and if my kids get excessive food on the floor I clean it up. The reason we do this is because I want to teach my children to leave places cleaner than we found them. The only time I ask for an employee of the restaurant to come out and do anything is if the table or seats are filthy. I think it is still their job to get out there and make sure it's acceptable for the next customer to use.

I am sorry. But to me, leaving your trash for others to clean up is lazy and rude! Once it leaves that cashier's hand...it is now ur property. So y is it any different to leave ur trash on a fast food restaurant table then leaving your trash on the ground in a park? There are people there, as well, that are paid to clean the park. So y not leave it sitting right on the ground where U were? Same idea to me! Hubby and I have had this discussion MANY times! He has the habit of leaving his on the table as well. I told him that if this restaurant gets busy (like most fast food places do @ lunch time) that extra trash on the table could get in another customer's way (because the cashier can not leave the cash register). That customer complains to the manager about the trash on the table. And then that cashier gets in trouble. Might even loose their job. So because U were too lazy to put your trash in the can..someone else has gotten in trouble for your actions! Y do U think that most trash cans are near the doors? So, on your way out, you can drop ur trash in them. U carried that food from the counter to the table when it weighed a lot more. But U can't manage to carry empty containers, that weigh a lot less, to the trash on ur way out? Just sheer lazy and rude to me! But, then again, it fits in today's way of thinking. Everything is someone else s responsibility...not yours!

For the most part, if's been years since I've eaten at a conventional fast "food" business. (i.e., McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King....) Not true. I ate at a Taco Bell last year with my parents while visiting them. I also occasionally eat at Panera and Chipotle and Pita Pit. However, I would and do clean up after myself to not do so is rude and inconsiderate and just plain lazy. However, if I were at a restaurant (also known as a sit down restaurant), I do not clean up after myself, but try and make things easier for the staff. (i.e., stack my dishes, make sure stray food and debris is cleaned, etc.)

Also, if it is not normally the job of the employees to clean the tables, people might walk out, seeing that the restaurant is messy and unclean. Who wants to eat a place that looks as though it could be contaminated?

Yes you are suppose to throw your trash away when you are done. THis is not a sit down restaurant where they come and clean your table after you are through. They do not pay the staff to clean up after you so they have to go and do double duty. Quit being a pig or stay home. I worked in fast food while I was in college. It still amazes me when I go to public places what pigs people are.

I dont think in all the time I have ever been in fast food restaurants that I have seen anyone walking out and leaving their stuff on the table. In a regular restaurant, obviously you leave it, they have busboys for it but in fast food places you are supposed to take it in the trash. The people who dont are just little weird. I have never seen one though.

I do see people leaving fries and spilled stuff on the tables and I'm sure I have left a frie or two behind in all the times I've been eating in these places but I scoop the stuff up and toss it out. If a lone fry falls to the floor, I do leave it. If a whole bunch falls, I pick them up.

    So is what your saying...

When you go to a fast food restaurant its okay to leave your trash, spills, half eaten food just laying everywhere looking like there was a food fight? Because someone Else is paid to clean it up? So you wouldn't mind if everyone who came into a fast food restaurant would just leave their trash everywhere looking like it was just a food fight? Wouldn't that make your job harder to do?

In my opinion, its rude to just leave your trash and food everywhere and it looks like someone just had a food fight. I'm pretty sure you would be pissed if just before they left, someone would spill their leftover drinks, and ball up and throw napkins everywhere, and then whatever left over food they have they just scatter over the table and then leave? I'm pretty sure you'd be pissed right knowing that you have to clean it up.

Even if it is your job to clean up after someone, its still rude for them to make your job harder. If anything they should try to make it a lil bit easier since you have to clean up after them. I think that someone should be nice enough to take any of their trash, and put it in the trash bins and not just leaving the place a hot mess.

  • I always throw my trash away at a fast food restaruant. I think it is rude and lazy to leave your nasty garbage laying on the table. No one wants to touch your half eatten burger, its just gross. I think of people who do this to be lazy slobs who dont think of others....

I'm ordering my food from a fast food place...they're making my dinner...but they aren't my maid.

Anyone with any manners at all...cleans up after themselves.

It's disrespectful to leave a pile of trash at a table and just walk away.

I'm not going to wipe down tables for you...

I do wipe down tables for ME before me and my kids eat there...simply because my bleach wipe will do a better job than your nasty wet rag...

but I won't leave the table in worse condition than I found it in.

That's lazy and rude and just bad manners.
