What obligation do I have to this woman?

An older retired woman with no family locally has no friends because she has alienated everyone by her rudeness recently had hip surgery and now is in the nursing home. I feel I should go see her because she has no one, but I have been hesitant to do so because I am not too enthusiastic about the probability of her being rude to me. My husband and adult children have advised not to bother with her because she will hurt my feelings. What say you?

It would be a lovely thing for you do to go and visit this woman. Perhaps she has been hurt in the past and has trouble trusting people these days?

Visiting her may make her day even if she does not show it. Just keep a thick skin and try to brighten this woman's day. Surgery like that can be quite traumatic for some people, especially an elderly woman with no friends or family to support her.

Anything this woman says to you shouldn't be taken personally, anyway. You have nothing to lose :)

You should go and visit her, take some flowers with you, dont speak much, dont ask her about her health, just sit besides for a min, and say that you wish her a good recovery and move out. You wud maintain your dignity, and she wont get any chance to show her rudeness.

I like the motto "Treat people better than they deserve to be treated."

Don't go see her because you're obligated, go see her because it's the kind thing to do. Suck it up and don't worry about her rudeness. She will appreciate that you came even if she is incapable of showing it. If she is truly horrible to you, you don't have to come back.

Zach, Lolface, and restless all have great suggestions and I don't know what more I can add except that your experience may end up being more positive than you expect. I know you will do what's right for both of you. Take care.
