Traveling to Denpasar, Bali -- need advice?

I'm going to Bali Denpasar for a conference so thought I'd spend a couple of days (about 2 and a half) looking over the place.

Does anyone have any advice. (places to stay, see, do) safe for single female traveling alone -- I prefer climbing volcanoes and stuff to diving. How much a taxi from the airport might cost. How difficult is it for people to get around?

Two days Bali is actually a very short time but better than nothing!

The first thing you have to know is that you'll need a Visa. Most nationalities can obtain a VOA (Visa on Arrival) just after leaving the plane and before Immigration. It will cost you 25 USD. Please check at a link to official Indonesia Embassy in in our web site about your visa requirements http://www.maxgramper.webs.com/

Because you have only a couple of days you should decide which ones of Bali multiple faces you want to see.

If you like beaches and tourist areas you should head for Kuta, just a few minutes away from airport by taxi. In Kuta area you will find a nice stretch of beach, many restaurants, shops and everything you can expect in a beach tourist spot.

If you want to lay in a more peaceful beach you should go to Jimbaran beach, about fifteen minutes from airport. There you'll find a beautiful palm fringed beach and also plenty of fresh fish restaurants. It's almost impossible to stay in Bali and not having at least one dinner in Jimbaran. Note that Jimbaran beach is also quite safer for swimming than Kuta beach because there are no high waves. Here we have our houses for rent, if you want you can have a look at our website http://www.maxgramper.webs.com/

If you wish to opt for a more "cultural" side of Bali we would advise you heading for Ubud area. In Ubud you can visit Monkey Forest for a lush tropical forest experience surrounded by sacred monkeys in a temple. Also a very short distance from Ubud there's Goa Gajah (Elephant's cave), a very interesting archaeological area where you can visit an ancient cave (the entrance is trough a face mouth carved in the rock) Of course in Ubud there are also plenty of restaurants, bars and shops.

You definitely should go to Batur lake and temple, the views from the surrounding area are actually astonishing. On the way back from Batur lake, don't miss Pura Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring, one of the most rewarding Balinese temples because is always full of prayers, and Gunung Kawi, just five minutes from Tampaksiring. Here you'll have to step down about three hundred steps to the river gorge where you'll see some very ancient tombs carved in the rocks. The landscape is also wonderful with the river gorge and the rice paddy fields.

You should note that because of Bali size, you can visit almost everything in several one-day excursions from your hotel or house.

Whatever destination you choose, we advise you booking a prepaid taxi on your arrival. Once you've passed customs you'll see a row of money changer (change at any, all of them have the same rate) and after the exit gate (just when leaving airport building) at the right side you'll see a small ticket office Pre-Paid Taxi. You choose your destination, pay the official fare and follow your taxi driver.

Bali is a quite safe destination for a solo female traveler. Simply have a little of common sense when meeting new friends. Hiring your taxi driver only in serious places or trough your hotel staff would be advised. When contract a driver, agree before with your schedule, places to visit, petrol included, etc.

We wish you a nice stay in Bali even if such a short time.
