My hamster is eating the side of his plastic cage? Need Help!?

He is a dwarf hamster & isn't aloud a normal cage as he could squeeze through the bars so the pet shop recommended a cage specially for dwarf hamsters, made of plastic and with small holes at the top half of the cage which are small so he can't fit through. My hamster has been standing on top of his house and biting the holes of the cage. At first I thought it was maybe normal, after a month I took the top of his house away so he couldn't stand on it, he then starting balancing on the edge of the house and the edge of the cage, and continued to chew at the cage. He has plenty of food, water and bedding. In his cage he also has an exercise wheel and 2 gnawing toys to sharpen his teeth. He has a little ball with bells on it but he doesn't seem to like it (he just pee's on it). He is eating his cage everyday, he is 1 year and 4 weeks old but he has been doing this since I got him, exactly a year ago. I am worried that this is a danger to him as the plastic is coming off, but he is eating some of it! Please someone help me or give me advice on what to do! x

Update:

Isabel - I have had 2 previous hamsters and neither of them done this, I don't think it's normal.

Anon - He has 2 gnawing chews in his cage which he does use so his teeth can't be 2 long. He also gets out in an exercise ball for half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night. Apparently you're not meant to keep them out longer than that.

Badjit - I think I will go to a pet shop today and get a new cage for him.

Pizza - I can't let him on the floor as he is very speedy and would get away + I have a cat. but like I said to Anon, he gets out in his exercise ball for an hour everyday and has a wheel in his cage.

H - I will research your idea just to check its safe for him, I wouldn't want to put lemon juice in if it could harm him.

Sophia - My 2 previous hamsters had the same sort of cage and neither of them done this. He has 2 gnawing toys for chewing, which he uses. He can't have a wired cage, cause he's so tiny he can fit out a hole the size of a pencil?

Your hamster is biting most likely becuase he is bored and frustrated. What species of hamster is he? Roborovski, winter-white russian, and cambells-russian dwarf hamsters are all social animals and should never be bought/sold/housed alone, as they get lonely and problems like this develope.

It is possible for people with the right equipment/housing and know-how to succesfully introduce 2 strange adult hamsters to each other, and get them to become best of friends - this might well solve your problem, but I understand you probably dont have the equipment and know-how to do this.

Another, slightly unconventional method for social enrichment is to try providing your hamster (if he is a social species) with a mirror - this can mimic having other hamsters in his home and reduce abnormal behaviours. Ive never heard of it being used with hamsters before, but I know it is succesfully used with horses and other larger animals, so its worth giving it a shot.

Other options are... a bigger cage! I rarely see hamster cages that I would consider big enough, especially plastic cages! Pet shops will try to rip you off...shop around online.

Or you could utilise the space you have better... fill the base with a good 2-3 inches or more with wood shavings, and bury lots of tubes in it - this gives him extra space to run around in underground. You could even try burying his bed in it, my dwarf hamster loves this and refuses to sleep anywhere else other than her tissue box underground.

Finally, if you don't already, try getting your hamster out every day! My hamsters go out for 1 hour per day in their exercise balls and they never bite their bars or display any other abnormal behaviours! You will probably find he will love his ball and will happily jump into it of his own free will - my hamsters are never put into their balls, they always walk in of their own accord, which is how I know they do love them!

I hope this helps and your hamster improves!

AMY - you seem to have started saying something to me there but have been cut off. It may have been something I could offer more advice in response to so could you have another go at posting it? :)

You should ask the vet or petstore. But also take him out of the cage to run around a bit in the house, my hamster did the same thing I took him out of the cage and made him run around on the flor for a while, put him back in, and he was so tired he slept, and did not eat the cage anymore.

I know this sounds really werid but i had the same problem with my two dwarfs and asked my pet shop, they said to put a bit of lemon juice where the hamster chews because they dont like that

mine chewed their plastic water bottle and the lemon juice really worked

    Source(s): had 7 hamsters
  • It seems a bit odd that your local pet supplier recommended a plastic cage for a hamster! Try going to a different pet shop and see what they recommend

if u can get a glass aquarium with a metal net lid for your hamster and if u cant then get wood toys from the store asap. or if money is a problem get a glass tray with tall sides and a lid.

Hampsters do that because of their chewing habits. You need to buy a new cage one that has wires instead of plastic.
