revolvers vs semi auto pistol for home defense?
i see that people with zero firearm training always go for a semi auto pistol for there first hand gun. . I always try to get people to buy a revolver if they have no or low experience dew to it has less things to learn and maintain. now don't get me wrong if you come to my house uninvited you will meet a 1911. but i also go shooting one or two times a week and have been shooting for 20 + years. my question is what do people feel safer with more ammo in the gun or feel that the revolver is out dated in some way. I do know one thing i have shot a lot of pistols from low end junk to high end show guns and the revolvers are always more dependable.

You are right revolvers are more dependable, they are also the gun all first time handgun owners should use. They are easier to operate, very rarely jam up,have more powerful loads, are easier to clean and are more intimidating. I do like some of those semi autos (Springfield XD, Beretta).
But for home defense a revolver is better.

I'm going to give you a simple straight answer! I have a few! They are in different places in my house! My first pick,is a Tokarev T-54! Where I sleep is a 38 S&W Colt. If it gets worse than that,I'm a terrible shot and will bring out the Mossy 12 ga,which is always loaded with 00 buck! Seriously,it's a matter of personal preference! You have your own preference after experience with the gun. I personally like revolvers, but I have several semi-auto pistols as well. Now to answer your question,I would much prefer to have six shots, that I know will work, than 8-30 that MAY fire from the semi-auto pistol!

Idk why people always promote revolvers over semi autos. My hk is like a single stack mag so it doesn't jam like XD or Glock mags. The fact is that double stacked autos have problems with jamming more then revolvers or single stacked auto loaders. When I suggest guns for people to buy I listen to what they want in a gun first and in many cases autos just feel like more of a gun now a days. Revolvers are great, I'm looking at a smith and Wesson 617 .22lr for my next purchase but a revolver just doesn't have the same intimidation power as a semi auto 1911 or larger caliber. Your right Revolvers are always more dependable so if someone is going to buy an auto they should invest money into a reliable gun that always goes bang.
Source(s): Is it weird that after shooting a Kimber 1911 match pistol .45ACP and a HK usp compact 9mm to feel that the 9mm has more recoil? .45ACP has alot more stoping power but it is built up like there is a horrible recoil attached to that power, (which there isn't, at least with a higher end 1911) I can see myself switching from 9mm black talons to .45ACP in the future. - 1 decade ago
Your going to get a lot of mixed answers on this one but most people can agree that it's whatever you like better. They both work fine but it's just what you want to use. Revolvers can basically work 100% of the time without worry and are really easy to maintain and keep ready. Auto's can also work fine most of the time but sometimes can jam (which the revolvers won't do) but they can be loaded much faster (providing you already have another loaded magazine ready) and have more options when it comes to the "laser sights". I personally would always use a auto....I don't want to have to use more than the first shot but I'd like to have more than 5 left IF I needed them (provided I doubt anyone who has a gun really is going to need 6 shots) I guess it's just the mindset of the person. If your a first time shooter and your really want a gun for defense...I'd pick revolver just for the simplicity...but if you know what your doing then I'd go for a auto....just my opinion though.....

Semi all the way.....
revolvers actually in some cases take longer to learn to shoot well due to stiff DA trigger pull and really light SA trigger....
and while revolvers are about 98%+ reliable....IF and WHEN they do jam...there is no tap-rack-bang....it usually requires taking the gun apart or at least a screwdriver and some effort to free a stuck cylinder....
and as i always say if u plan to use a gun for defense or even have a gun training of some sort should be in order......meaning u need to train long before u put any type of gun on ur bedside table.....and a semi is quickly learned in that training.....

I never recommend anyone get a revolver as a first gun. Even ignorant people today can learn how to operate a semi auto in just few minutes- no longer that it would take them to learn a revolver. So- there is really no more of a learning curve with a semi. A sa/da semi with a thumb safety is safer and better than any revolver. Some semi's are not- with the exception that you keep the chamber empty. But then you have to work to ready the gun.
The "more maintenance needed for a semi" is horse manure.
Revolvers are fine, I have a bunch of them, but they are not better for new gun owners under any circumstances. If you have to learn in the first place- learn on the auto and be ahead of the game.

I will always go for a semi automatic every time. Nowadays it isnt s simple matter of a guy stealing a TV, its a team of thugs coming in and invading a house or somebody so high on meth that it takes 2 or 3 shots each. So, simply higher capacity, faster reloads and more available ammo. Multible targets is my concern.

I've always looked at how fast can you get to one or the other.
Semi autos are fast at loading and good at keeping the ammo separate like from kids. And it depends on how fast the fight is going to be. If the intruder as a gun with him and you battle it out, you can swap your magazine faster.
With revolver, you got to be careful at how you get to your ammo when put away from kids.

Q: "revolvers vs semi auto pistol for home defense?"
A: They're both good, just pick whichever you prefer or is appropriate for your situation.
Revolver = can load it and then leave it alone until needed. Simple & easy to use and maintain.
Semi-auto = more effort to load/unload and maintain, but offers greater cartridge capacity to engage multiple opponents.

If 6 rounds aint enough, you need to get more practice or move to a less dangerous neighborhood. I would probably grab my .357 Mag and my son would probably grab his XD-45, although neither of us would have a problem using the other gun.
