Archery question regarding a recurve bow?

I have a second hand wooden laminate recurve bow and when I draw the string too far back, it comes out of the grooved notch which can be painful if you get snapped by it. Is this a defect in the string or the bow? Can it be fixed?

    The bow is fine and the string is fine you are just pulling the bow past its designed draw length. The fix for this is buying a bow that fits your draw length. Do not cut the notches deeper as this will weaken the bow and may cause it to fail.

    All bows have a draw length.

    This explains that;

    If you go past the bows draw length, its possible for the string loop to slip off or even break the bow.

    Another possibility and a quite common one is the loop on the end of the bow string is too large. This can be fixed simply by wrapping it to make it smaller so it fits tighter.

    A warped bow (as said) will do this also. If the bow is warped badly its toast. If its not that bad here is how some “repair” it;

    “Submerge the twisted limb in a bathtub filled with hot, but not scalding water; while underwater, twist the limb back into proper form; you may have to overtwist to achieve proper alignment; when the limb is properly straightened, run cold water over it; then string the bow and leave overnight to allow the limbs to set. It may require two or three treatments to achieve exactly the proper alignment.

    To save yourself much agravation take it to an archery shop. Some will give you free advice and some will not. To be frank some are VERY helpful but some are down right jerks! Find the helpful ones and they will help you. No logic in working on a bow that wont fit your draw length or that’s toast.

    This is more then likely caused by a twisted bow limb.If you look at the limbs very closely you will be able to tell one limb has a slight twist in it.

    This is caused by not using a bow stringer to string the bow with. When you use the method of stepping into the bow, holding one limb in the front of your leg and pushing the top limb with your hand if you are not very careful you will twist the limbs.

    You can, at times correct the problem if it isn't too severe by purposely twisting the limb that is our of kilter in the direction it needs to go in. But this is best done by someone that has a little experience dealing with a twisted limb. It sounds as it yours is severely twisted. You should be able to see it if you look carefully. Good luck!

    Source(s): Edit- Bear Crap has given you an excellent answer concerning your bow.Especially on how to take out the twist, if that is the problem.Sometimes I forget that all things on a bow is not up to "spec" when I give an answer. The bear man took that into consideration when he gave you his answer. I m impressed!

    One of the notches on the end of the bow is obviously not cut deep enough for the loop in the bow string to remain inside once the bow is drawn back. It can be remedied, but I would search for someone who had made recurve bows from scratch and get them to fix it.

    Are you sure you have it strung on the back of the bow and not the front? Just asking. I've seen that happen more than a few times with new shooters.

    You must be over drawing the bow. Old stick bows and recurves are made for a precise draw length. When I shot recurves, I had to have a shorter bow for my short draw length. This is probably the problem with yours, it is too short for your draw.
