Firstly are you looking for better MPG or better performance?
The SDI Is a common rail diesel (about 68hp) a very good engine, which will run for ages (I have same engine in my Octavia 279,000 miles). This would be the better choice for an every day run around.
The TDI Is turbo charged, however before you rush in!! Check for regular services and oil changes, the older TDI suffer from turbo problems if not properly looked after. Service history isn't the only thing to check but usually if there's Service history the car is looked after better. Again very good on fuel, more of a motorway or long journey car, as this type of journey suites the engine more than SDI.
Both cars are worth a look, use the Service history, car condition, Extras and how the car drive and feel to separate them. Try to find out a little about the cars history ( Ex-Taxi, Rep's car) as this can help you work out if it has been thrashed.
Hope this helps
