I know this sentence sounds a little weird anyway, but I can't think of another way to word it. Suggestions gladly accepted!
"This caused many people to have to stay on the ship sinking in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912."

This caused many people to have to stay on the sinking ship in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. That sounds better to me.
