I need new methods for jackrabbit hunting in northern Nevada?

I'm having a bit of frustration hunting Jacks here around the Reno Nevada area. The rabbits are thick and find them is not at all difficult.

The problem I have is that I use either a .25 or 9MM air rifle and the only time I see the rabbits, they have the after burners on and in the thick brush out here, I just can't get a good sight picture before they disappear.

I tried still hunting where I would sit with my back to a bush or rock and just wait just before sunset to just after sunset...still no go.

I tried using binoculars to try and spot them from a distance but so far that hasn't worked either.

Anyone have a trusted, tried and true, method other than going to get a shotgun?

Update:

Tahoeguy, yeah I know that the blacktail jack is legal 365 - 24/7 - just like coyote. Hunting blm land in the Winnemucca road/ dogskin mountain / hungry valley area.

Sometimes I think the little buggers are just messing with me. Kinda like I feel when the coyotes start barking and howling while I have my call running...just laughing at the human.

    Howdy neighbor!

I use a .17HMR or a .22Mag. if you are on BLM land, its completely legal. Have patience, and keep your eyes peeled. I find that if there is anything green to eat nearby, you will have better luck. Dont hesitate! If you get a shot, then take it. They dont sit still for long. Find some high ground with some low sage. You arent going to see them in the brush, so work areas where the brush thins out.

Good luck, and dont let the snow keep you from trying! They still need to eat, and the snow gives contrast.

With your problem a 410 shotgun. You only need a 1 second chance to look at the rabbit to pull the trigger. It is a great killer.
