why is my cat lethargic?

I came home today after being gone for about 8 hours. My cat who seemed fine this morning was laying in the litter box, extremely lethargic. She has never done this before. We pulled her out and cleaned her up, she was very weak and breathing a little fast with a slightly higher heart rate. She could walk but very slow. I brought her to her water bowl and tried to get her to drink but she wasn't interested. I did give her some wet food and she ate all of it. We've been sitting with her for about a half hour now, and shes just laying on the bed. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is she may have gotten into a bowl with left over ranch dressing in it from me eating a salad before I left. Can this cause her lathargy? Its 10pm where I am now, so I figured if she hasnt improved by morning I should bring her into the vet. Usually she dosn't like being held or pet unless its on her terms but she isn't resisting being held or pet. Is there anything else I can do to help her or just watch her for any other signs?

Yeah, always make sure you have food for her, dry food and wet food, they do like to eat. My cat gets like that too. Normally doesn't like to be held but when she is really sick I can hold her all day long. Cats have their own way of being. It's highly possible that she may have eaten something she should not have. Sometimes cats will overcome whatever it is they are experiencing. My cat jumps sometimes up and down by the window and every now and then will get a pinched nerve and will be unable to walk. But, in a day or two it goes away and she is herself again and I've saved money on a vet bill. Just like a human being, we we sometimes pull a muscle or something, in a day or two it feels better sometimes.

You might want to take her to a vet just to get her checked out though. Maybe the vet could recommend something or prescribe something for her to take for a really bad upset tummy? Not sure what your cat had or why it was lethargic, other than the fact that maybe she ate something she should not have or needed to eat because she hadn't in a while....make sure she has food out every day..food and water...I know you said she wasn't interested in water....that's ok..she'll go to it when she is ready..regular dry and canned cat food only... My cat likes those Gravy Sensations in the box, they come in little packets. Oh she eats those things up like there was no tomorrow. I changed her food routine because she just wasn't eating everything from her canned food, Friskies anymore...have to spice up her life a little bit..I usually give her a Fancy Feast every now and then too...:)

Good Luck..hope she feels better....maybe she missed you really badly and was very worried about you, you know cats do worry..:)

Get her to a vet NOW! Fast breathing and increased heart rate would not be caused by eating ranch dressing, something much more serious is happening that needs immediate attention. If you have a 24-hour vet clinic get her in now, if not be sure to go in first thing in the morning. Watch her very closely, not anything out of the ordinary she is doing, and give this info to the vet when you get there.

It could be FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome) which is caused by the ash content in cat-food causing it to crystallize the urine and blocking their urinary tract. If you do not get the cat to the vet it could very easily die from a ruptured bladder because it has no way to relieve itself. Since you say you found him in the litter-box I think this is the most likely problem. Feel your cats bladder to see if it is full it will be very obvious if this is the problem but do not press hard it cannot be forced only the vet can fix this. Afterwards they will have you feed the cat diet cat-food that is low in ash content. Ash content by the way is leftover animal by-products that they literally burn to a crisp and add to production process and even though I think this to be an immoral thing to do it does not pose a problem for most cats. Please contact your local Emergency Vet Clinic if you have one.

Source(s): My cat had this and he tried to let me know something was wrong by walking up to me and he proceeded to try to pee in front of me but nothing would come out so I rushed him to the vet and they told me if I had not rushed him there he would have died. Please add a comment to your post so I know you did read this because I do feel this to be an emergency situation that may not wait till morning.

I just went through the same thing yesterday! My cat was lethargic and just layed around, come to find out He had a fever of 106! Was dehydrated, anemic, and they wanted to keep him over night with a IV but I couldn't pffered it, I was told he might need a blood transfusion because of his red cell count low, I have him on medication now still don;t know what it is but he is very sick, Don't wait! If I did not get medication at the least,, my cat would have died, please take him now!

Without a veterinary degree and seeing the cat it is very difficult to diagnose your cat. I would stick to your plan and take her to the vet. I doubt this would be caused by the salad dressing but a vet would be the best person to figure this out and help your pet. Please don't delay taking her. Best wishes, hope she'll be okay.

To have found your cat as you did must have been very upsetting.

I'm very afraid for you cat to have to wait until the morning to go to the vets...if you live somewhere that has an emergency vet clinic, even if it is not your normal vet...I would call them and tell them the symptoms and see if they think you should bring your cat in tonight.

    Something is very, very wrong.

Please update us when you find out anything.

She sounds relatively poorly to me. Clean her eyes up up to you'll and depart her to relaxation a few in which quiet. Make definite she has blank water and a clutter field regional. You under no circumstances understand by means of Monday she might be again to natural, if no longer take her to the vets. i am hoping she will get bigger.

Your cat is very sick. please take it to your vet. It's not your salad dressing that's made it lethargic, it probably passed a kidney stone and is in lots of pain.
