Why is my laptop's LCD display not working even though there's no crack in it?

Today I went to turn my laptop on and the light in the display came on (it looks like a gray-purple when looked at slightly from the top) but the log-in screen didn't pop up after a few seconds like it usually does. There are no cracks in the LCD (I already checked) and everything else with the laptop is fine. I'm actually using the laptop right now but it's hooked up to an external monitor. I was thinking that maybe some wire came loose inside or something weird along those lines but any ideas as to what's going on?

Also, in case it's of any use, the laptop in question is an HP Pavilion dv4-1430us. The battery has lost some charge and as far as I know the antivirus/spyware systems are functioning.

Probably just a loose data cable connection.

Try pressing down on the bezel of the laptop directly above the keyboard near where the hinges make contact. That is usually where the connection is. If it changes at all, you know it is just a bad connection.

It could also be a bad cable, which happens from time to time. Either way, the part should not cost more than $40 and repair should not cost more than $60 or so.
